just about equal to domestic require
ments. That la to say, we will produce In

IN OTHER words, demand will ap
proximately balance supply, which
should mean a fair price based on
SOUND causes.
As long aa that condition continues,
wheat growing will remain profitable.
WHAT la responsible for restoring
the balance of supply and de
mand In the wheat market AAA or
the drought?
Probably a little of both. At any
rate, let's be thankful for the RE
SULT and not quarrel about the
cause.
ENCOURAGING prospect:
Plans for using existing govern
ment agencies to speed the nearly
five billion dollar work-relief pro
gram to an operating peak by mid
November are disclosed by President
Roosevelt upon his return. to Wash
ington from his vacation.
If enough people can be put back
to work, so that they can get money
enough to pay present HIOHER
prices for what they have to buy,
prosperity will begin to show its face
again.
IT WOULD be "better, of course, for
all concerned, if the unemployed
could be put to work by private In
dustry, making things that people
want and need. Instead of by the
government on public works whose

The theory that he had been robbed
and hurled from a moving automo
bile appeared to have been dispelled
today aa police continued their In
vestigation of the critical Injury of
Paul Herda, 72, a gardener.
Although he was still unable today
to recall details of the near tragedy,
police who back-tracked his trail on
a side road leading Into the lower
Columbia highway believed he had
fallen from a 20-foot railroad trestle.
When found he was dazed, suffering
from a broken leg and long exposure.
He was known to have had consider
able money and this at first led po
lice to believe he had been attacked.

land fire department, was Indicted
yesterday by the Multnomah county
grand Jury on a charge of Involuntary
manslaughter for the traffic accident
death of Laurrle Salo, 47. Johnson,
who reslgued from the fire depart
ment after the accident, was charged
In the indictment with driving while
under the Influence of liquor.
