White Bunny Given Slmses

NEW YORK, April 8. (AP) Kj
Culbertson made dire threat today
acalnst a white rabbit which hai
become part of the Blms-Culbertson
bridge clash.
The rabbit was given to Hal and
Dorothy 81ms as a good luck token
In their ISO-rubber match with Cul
bertson and his wife Josephine. It
brought continued good fortune to
the Slmses and at the end of the
eightieth rubber last night they had
reduced the Culbertson lead to 7.180
points.
Culbertson looked on the rabbit
at Crockfords' club today with none
too friendly eyes.
"If the Slmsea continue winning,"
he declared, "that rabbit must go. I
shall Instruct Crockford's chef to
make him Into hasenpfeffer."
In ten rubbers played yesterday,
the 81ms side made a net gain of
2.280 polnta. although at the atart
of the last rubber of the night they
had the Culbertson lead down to
0,330 points.
They made a desperate attempt to
take the last rubber but couldn't
squeeze out even a game. They went
down five times and the Culbertsons
ahalked up a plus of 1.B50 points
on the rubber.
The culbertsons lead Ip rubbera.
43 to 87, and In polnta, 88,780 to 81.
800. The Slmaca made their biggest
gain of the day on the last rubber
of the afternoon session when Slma
made a vulnerable grand alam.
They picked up additional polnta
last night because Culbortson was In
a doubling mood. On four occaslona
they fullllled doubled contracts,
making overtrlcks on three of them.
They went down three tlmea on dou
bled contracta, not vulnerable.
The match will continue today and
tomorrow with afternoon sessions
only.

Fundamentals of Bowling
By C. O. (Chuck) Collier
Nationally Known Bowling Authority
LESSON 8 AilvnniiiE? of
Diagram
RRFER TO I) I AC HAM
A great many bowlers fall to take
advantage of the proper angles In
rolling at spares for their style of
ball, with the result they have one
or more "Jinx" spares.
Bad spares, especially bunches, or
such combinations as the 1, 2 and 4
1, a, 4 and 8 1, 2 and 8 and 1, 2,
4 and 7 are very easily missed. There
are many ways of making them ,the
easltest way, however, Is to try to
hit them high or full, covering as
many pins as possible with the ball
There are other combinations In
the "bunch" class which should also
be hit full In the "spare pocket."
Such spares as 2, 4, 6 and 8 2, 4, 5,
7 and 8 and 8. 4 and 5 with the
same combinations on the right side
of the alley, have a pocket the same
as the 1-3 of a strike set-up.
Such combinations as the 2. 8 2,
S and 8 and 2, 4 and 8 are consid
ered difficult for any ball, but are
easily made when hit full.
Single pin spares. No. 4, No. 7. No.
6 and No. 10, give some bowlers a
lot of trouble. The No. io Is prob
ably missed more than all others put
more Jabbering when he was in
trduble. Hubka showed up well when
he crawled through Casey's legs to
break an Indian death lock, and
again when he missed a series of
Sonnenbergs but folded up like an
acrobat and rolled to his feet with
out Injuring himself.
It took Columbo only 10 minutes
to win the second tumble, which
he took with a beautiful body slam
that nearly knocked the Cornhusker's
teeth out. This period also saw some
acrobatic Sonnenbergs. this time
from both Hubka and Columbo, but
neither could find the other. Jce
tried Borne flying mares, and so did
Casey, shaking, the daylights out 01
the Nebraskan before applying, the
body slam.
With only 11 minutes to go. they
got Into high gear during the final
period, and before long were hit
ting all the ropes In a wild scramble
to see who could get across the ring
fastest. Again they couldn't locate
one another with their Intended
shoulder butts, and eased down Into
flying mares, when the gong ended
the bout.
Masked Marvel, the hooded meanle,
won the odd fall In the first match,
when lanky Don Wagner, ex-footballer
from Oregon State college.
missed a flying body scissors and I
stretched himself out. Timid at first,
Wagner nevertheless went after the
mystery mart with revenge for his
defeat here six weeks ago, and if he
hadn't nearly killed himself doing
It. the former grid star would have
knocked some of the meanness out
of the hooded one.
The Marvel, dragging Wagner
around the ring by his hair, slug- I

together. If the bowler consistently
misses it outside or Inside, it Is a
case of the wrong angle for his ball.
If you roll across the alley from left
to right and your ball always drops
in the gutter, 70U are taking too
much alley and should move more
to the center of the alley. If you al
ways miss it Inside, move more to
the left side of the alley. The same
applies to the No. 8 pin as well as
the 6-10 combination, except that you
have a greater margin to work in.
Such single pin as the No. 4 and
No. 7 should never be missed. Use
your strike ball and pjace It a few
inches farther to the center of the
alley than your spot for the strike
ball.
The same positions as suggested for
the 0-10 combination can be applied
for the 3-6-10 or the 3-10 baby split.
The suggested position for the 4-7
can be used to advantage for the
2-4-7 or the 2-7 baby split.

keeper clocked It at 11 minutes
Wagner came back angry, and after
d Ing some fancy eye gouging of his
own, slithered the Marvel to the mat
with a flying body scissors to win
the second tumble In only 31,? min
utes. When the masked meanle tried
more of his unethical eye-thumbing,
referee Ray Ftlsbie offered Wagner
the deciding fall, but the big Oregon
Stater socked Ray on the side 01
the head and for about five minutes
was slugging both the refereeand
the Marvel, until he tried another
flying scissors and landed on the
back of his neck.
A flip of a coin decided which
match was to be staged first. Pro
moter Mack Llllard Is at work lining
up another big-time card for next
week's show, an. hopes to re-match
Hubka and Columbo, this time with
no time limit.
