pretentious mammoth musicals.

On Craterian Bill
Seldom, if ever, has a motion pic
ture received such spontaneous hi
larity as greeted "Ruggles of Red
Gap." which opened at the Craterian
theater yesterday. Full to the hilt
with that quality of fun making
that tickles all who appreciate a
good laugh, "Rugglcs" Is one of the
altogether too seldom seen type of
pictures which pleases not Just a se
lect group, but everyone In the au
dience. Sheer glee at some of the
highlights In the film brought re
sounding laughter time after time
from a crowd that seemed to certain
ly be having the time of their lives.
Charles Laughton has been accept
ed as an actor of more than ordinary
ability for quite some time, but, with
his portrayal of the title role of
"Ruggles." he will unquestionably
add thousands more to his already
large following. Laughton Is "Rug
gles" and "Ruggles" is Laughton. It
would Indeed bo difficult to Imagine
anyone else, after seeing this picture,
In the role Laughton, in a surpris
ingly effective fashion, contributes
as the dignified British valet who
transfers his home from England to
the town of Red Gap, V. S. A., after
having been won by an American
tourist In a poker game.
Charlie Ruggles. as Egbert Froud,
the American who wins "Ruggles"
from Roland Young, the titled Eng
lishman , comes through as expected
and delivers another fine comedy
characterization together with his
seemingly eternal team-mate, Mary
Bolnnd. Yes, she's his wife.
Zasu Pitts as Mrs. Judson, Red
Gap's leading widow who becomes
enamored of "Ruggles," adds to the
merriment.
But, If for no other reason, you
owe It to yourself to see "Ruggles of
Red Gap," Just to see the scream
ingly sequence wherein Charlie Rug
gles and his newly acquired valet,
starting for the Louvre wind up in
