The astronomers were satisfied
that spring arrived quite on sched
ule at 6:18 a. m. today, but the man
on the at meet was beset by pardonable
perplexity.
In very few places within Oregon's
wide confines this morning could
there be found much evidence of
other than a nominal change In sea
sons. Winter's snow had gathered In
big drifts In many sections of the
atate and icy temperatures prevail
ed. "Unsettled tonight and Friday with
rain In west portion and snow In
east portion," read the weather bu
reau report, and It added succinctly
"continued cold."
The Pacific northwest remained
unreasonably chilly with considerable
new snow In alt higher elevations.
Today was the date of the vernal
equinox, and the earth was at right
angles to the sun mid day and night
was of equal duration, in the south
ern hemisphere autumn has arrived
and while- we In the north look for
ward to summer, those below the
equator will soon be preparing for
winter.
VOTED BY HOUSE

President Roosevelt's recovery pro
gram In face of threats that he would
be "elected to stay home In 1938" if
he failed to rote for either the Pat
man or Vinson bonus bill.
He added he would be pleased to
vote for a bill providing for bonus
payments to unemployed veterans,
but expressed fear the government
credit would be Impaired by adding
another two billion dollars to the na
tional debt.
A "compromise proponent was
Representative McReynold (Demo..
Tenn.). close friend of the adminis
tration, whose bill was drafted by the
veterans administration.
A quorum call had filled the floor
when McReynolds arose to discuss his
plan, under which negotiable, interest
bearing bonds would' be exchanged
for the adjusted compensation certifi
cates which veterans now hold.
