Fifty New Players Is Goal
Set at Meeting of Cam
paign Committee Tour

Plans for ft membership, drive In
Rogue Valley Oolf club with a goal of
150 members were made yesterday at
ft luncheon meeting of Harry McMa-
hon, president, Eugene Thorndike,
treasurer, Homer Marx, secretary, and
J. Verne Shangle, who la at the head
of the campaign.
Popularity of the club Is at 1U peak
and the membership drive was
launched with the view of signing up
AO or more new golfers within the
next few week. The membership now
stands at more than 100 and applica
tions are coming Into the club stead
ily. Tournaments and special events
have been numerous and successful
during the winter, and a great deal
of activity is being lined up for the
prlng and summer, promising the
olub's biggest season. Officials are
at work drawing up a schedule of the
many tournaments and special events
that are being planned and will an
nounce it soon.
Besides numerous award tourna
menta leading up to the Southern
Oregon championship tourney which
will be held Aug. 30, 31. and Sept. 1
and a, new Inter-city event are
planned to bring from Klamath Falls,
Grants Pass. Anhlnnd, Eureka and
other neighboring golf centers, which
will also mean return matches away
from home. Dubs ami duff era' tour
merits will be held, and kicker tour
nament, ladder tournaments, ftag
tournaments, point-par tournaments,
rotation tournaments, tomb, tone
tournaments, mat tournaments, mix
ed tournament and team matches
will be scheduled. Another popular
vent of last summer will be repeat
ed the weekly men s evening tourna
ment on Wednesday, originated to
allow business men to play In compe
tition after work hours and during
the cool of the evening.
During the last several weeks ladles'
day at the course each Wednesday has
been gaining In popularity and the
women's membership has been In
creasing steadily. There were more
than 80 lady golfers present at the
luncheon and Scotch foursome held
last week.
Under the direction of Verne Shan
gle it Is planned to get new golfers
on the course and "sell" the club by
showing them ft good time. Plana are
underway for a novel tournament
featuring new players, which will
bring the prospective members to
gether and give them an opportunity
to get acquainted with the course,
with the club members and with one
another.
President Mc Mali on expressed the
purpose of the membership drive
when he said that new business men
and othera who have not yet Joined
the club will be given an opportunity
to become active in the community
through participation in the commu
nity's moat popular sport.

Browns, the American league la oft
to a faat start In the annual com
petition In the "grapefruit league."
American leaguers thus far have
won 13 of their 31 spring training
clashes with National league oppo
nents. The Browns, with three vic
tories In four starts, have contrib
uted most heavily to this advantage.
On a percentage basis, two Na
tional league clube. the Pltjaburg
Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers, out
rank the Browns, but they have
played only one game each.
Of the six American league clubs
which so far have figured In the
Inter-league struggle, only the New
Tork Yankees, beaten twice by the
Boa ton Braves In three games, have
failed to get better than an even
break.
The heaviest losers In the National
league have been the New York
Olanui, beaten five tlmea by Ameri
can league rivals.

MINNEAPOLIS. Minn., March 30.
(AP) Ray Steele of Olendale. Cel.,
gained a draw In his heavyweight
championship match with Jimmy
Londos, title honlder, last night.
Before a record house of 10.000
spectators, Steele outclassed Londos
for 60 minutes, keeping the champion
groggy with flying head locks, but as
he rushed in to finish htm, the Greek
applied a walstiock and pitched the
Callfornlan through the ropes.
Stele damaged the ligaments In his
left shoulder as he landed. He climb
ed back Into the ring, managing to
evade the champion's attempts to
close In on him by sprinting around
the ring for the last four minutes of
the bout.

tional A. A. U. basketball tourna
ment squared away for the third
round tests today with all eight seed
ed teams still In the scramble for the
title the Tulsa Oilers hope to win for
a third straight year.
The defending champions, excused
from the first round competition
along with all but one of the official
favorites, cleared the initial hurdle
last night with an eay 36-25 victory
over Colorado college.
They are matched in the final third
rounder tonight with the Jones store
team of Kansas City, which hod a
Htruggle with the Durant (Okla.)

1035 Notre Dame football team, died
In New York hospital today.
He underwent two operations last
Friday for mastoiditis and serious
head ailments. Numerous blood
transfusions failed to aid him.
