Less Expense a Certainty
Overbidding Remains
Dangerous Practive
Rule Breaking Less Costly
By Tom O'Nell
Associated Press Stall Writer.
NEW YORK. March 19. (AP)
Contract bridge players were wonder
ing today whether the revised game,
controlled by rules which go Into ef
fect March 31. will have as much kick
since evidently It will be less expen
sive. In the belief of Charles R. Steven
son, president of the Whist club of
New York, which promulgated tlio
code In cooperation with the Portland
club of London, the Commission
Prancalse du Bridge of Paris and a
committee of representatives of Amer
ican organizations, the enjoyable
qualities of bridge will be Increased.
Overbids eit 111 Dangerous
All expert SRree that some of the
stiffness will be removed from the
game, but the extent of removal de
pends on how prone a player la to
overbidding at present.
For instance, tinder the present
code one can bet 30,800 points. It
would coat that If you should bid
vulnerable grand slam, be doubled
and then redouble and not take a
single trick. Under the new code the
maximum pennlly Is 7.600 points. Dif
ferences In penalties lor the first five
undertrlcks are not so marked.
Undoubled undertrlcks will cost
only 100 points each under the new
code, a change which will have the
effect of Increasing competitive vul
nerable bidding. As a corollary tliete
must be more doubling of vulnerable
contracts.
Penalties Changed
The new code changes the penslty
for doubled not vulnerable seta to
100 for the flrat trick and 200 for
each- subsequent trick. The penalty
for doubled and vulnerable set will
be 300 for the flrat trick and 300 for
sch successive trick.
To calculate quickly how many
points your opponent Is set doubled,
take the penalty for the second
undertrlck, multiply by the number
of tricks set and subtract 100. For
Instance, five down doubled vulner
able. The penalty for the second trick
la 300. Five times 300 la 1500. Sub
tract ion and you have 1400. To cal
culate redoubled pennlties multiply
doubled penalties by two.
The new code changes the no
trump count to 40 for the first trick
and 30 for each auccesstve trick In
stead of 30 and 40 alternating,
tlrnnrl 8uhn Bonus Cut
Grand slam bonuses nre reduced to
1000 not vulnerable and 1800 vulner
able. Harold 8. Vanderbllt. who wrote the
code save: "The change was made to
protect the pocketbook of the loser."
Lota of players liked those big bo
nuses ana allot freely at them.
Under a quirk of the new code It
la possible to contract for 14 tricks
when there are only 13 In the deck.
For Instance. If a player should bid
seven no trump and the next player
should say soven clubs, he can be re
quired to make his bid sufficient,
which would Involve aaylng eight of
something.
Commentators today gave speelsl
praise to simplification of laws gov
erning Infractions of the rulea. espe
cially abolition of penalties calling Mr
new deals for bids and passes out of
turn.

PROSPECT TO LIST
OF CAGE
BUTTE FALLS. March 19. fSpl.)
Butte Falls town team wound up a
very successful season Saturday night
by trouncing Prospect. 41-31. The
win came easily, ond Butte Falls
coasted In on the long end of the
score after piling up a lead In the
first three quarters.
Saturday's victory served to avenge
an early season defeat when Butte
Falls, playing without the services of
three regulars, dropped a one-point
decision to Prospect. The only other
defeat of the season was a beating
by St. Mary's All-Stars, but since the
Timber Beosta had already won one
from the same outfit and were clear
ly off form the night of the second
contest, no "beat team" was deter
mined. As far aa Brown's "Cham
pions" are concerned, Butte Foils de
feated them handily in their only
meeting of the season and, from the
appearance of that contest, could
probably even trim the "Champions"
In football.
Tha only team abla to boast a
share In the championship la the St
Mary's All-Stars, and local fans and
players are confident of a Butte Falls
win ahould a no t lie r contest be staged.
So having suffered only two defeata
out of 18 eontests and holding vic

team of Butte Foils rightfully lays
calm to the independent champion
ship of southern Oregon.
