TROY WINS 32-31
'Prayer Shot' by Holbrook

Fans in Tears Stars
Ousted On Account Fouls
CORVALLIS, Ore., March 12. (AP)
The University of Southern Cali
fornia Trojana today took home
their Pacific coast conference baa
ketball crown forged In the Infernal
heat of a 32 to 31 last minute vic
tory here last night over Oregon
State college.
The game was a wild, hectic cli
max to a thrill-sated aeries which
went the full three-game limit.
The game fight of the Beaver to
come from behind In the second
half, their subsequent loss of part
of the lead, their new rally and then
Ernest Hoi brook's final arching caat
off shot, which descended like cer
tain doom through the loop for a
Trojan victory left the feverish,
throbbing crowd emotionally out ol
bounds.
Players and Fans Sob.
Most of the Oregon State players
were In tears and emotions welled
over In some of the excited spec
tators who sobbed almost hysteri
cally, unashamed.
The jubilant Trojans, realizing
their first coast championship in
three seasons of playoffs, slapped the
grinning Holbrook on the back.
The end came with Outtero and
Oram or Southern California and
Cornell rig and Palmberg of Oregon
State chased from the fast, rough
game with four fouls each.
The Trojans led. 18 to 14, at the
end of the first half during which
Oregon State swung Into motion
after being headed, 12 to 4, near the
tart.
Beavers Gain Form.
With the opening of the second
half the Beavers were more effective,
both offensively and defensively.
Captain Oeorge Hlbbard started the
Beaver rally when he quickly caged
a pair of his flat trajectory baskets
from around the keyhole, putting
Oregon State, 30 to 19.
Outtero, try in k to ram his way
toward the basket, was met by Palm
berg and a double foul was called.
It was the fourth foul on the rubber-legged
Adonis, but he tied the
score at 30-all for his 13th point,
his 44th of the aeries, before leaving
the game with sodden spirit amid
one of the greatest ovtttlona ever
given a basketball player here.
Palmberg also sank his shot, but
before the end of the game he, too,
went the four-foul route.
It waa six-foot-four Jack Hupp
who was the pinch hitting star keep,
lng the Trojans In the game. Ore
gon state gained a five-point lead,
but Hupp quickly potted three
points to make It 30 to 3B for Ore
gon State.
MIm Prove Break.
Tuttle, Beaver substitute, scored
a goal with a minute to go. Then
Hupp took a dribb'e right away
from an Oregon State man and
sprinted for a goal, leaving Oregon
State ahead, 31 to 30.
It was Oregon State's tip-off and
Tuttle scored again, but Pblen waa
caught fouling at center. Luckily, as
It happened. Find lay missed the foul
shot. Holbrook took the rehmind,
dribbled frantically away from the
basket and then whirled and sank .

Oregon State won the first game
of the aeries 38 to 35 and the Tro-
Jans evened Saturday night with a :
88 to 31 win. Southern California's
