Better Homes
JACKSON county's Better Housing campaign will itart iu
earnest tomorrow. The S.E.R.A. will make a complete sur
vey of building requirements,
and classified at headquarters.
Since this survey is being conducted in cooperation with the
government's effort to improve housing conditions, a courteous
attitude toward the solicitors, and the cheerful giving of infor
mation, requested, is to be expected.
These solicitors are not trying to pry into anyone's private
business. They are merely engaged in securing information the
government wants, and only wish to render assistance where
assistance is DESIRED.
The movement is a worthy one. Spring is the time to clean
up and brush up. Those who would like to make improvements
and repairs, but lack the ready cash can secure a loan from the
Consumers Credit Association, at a low rate of interest and on
easy payments.
The success of the campaign will mean a
stimulation of the local purchasing power,
more employment,
better housing conditions which mean better all around
social conditions,
more work and more money for all.
With the hearty support the purposes of the campaign justi"
fy, success should be certain.
Why Not Reason It Out?
TPJIE Townscnd old age pension
No good can come from calling it, or ita proponents,
NAMES. The time has passed when the Townsend drive can
be checked by vituperntion or "putting on the heat." The only
hope lies in putting on the light.
True, there are many sclf-sccking politicians, trying to ride
along on the Townsend tide; there are many chisolers and flini
flammers, who are supporting the measure, solely for what they
think they can get out of it for THEMSELVES.
But the rank nnd file of Townsend supporters, are entirely
honest and sincere, they believe it can be done, tli'cy believe it
will benefit the country to do it. '
These people, BECAUSE they are honest and BECAUSE
they are sincere, will only abandon the idea when they are con
vineed the proposal is impractical convinced it can't b,e done,
that instead of benefiting the country if it were adopted, the
Townsend plan would do the exact reverse.
This is what this paper has tried to do in the past, and this
policy it will continue. Our opposition to the Townsend plan
does NOT proceed from any indifference to the unfortunate
plight of many people in this country, old or young, nor to
any denial that a moro just and equitable division of wealth
should come nor to any opposition to a WORKABLE old age
pension that will give the aged and infirm, freedom from want
and suffering in their declining years. In fact such an old age
pension, this paper supports and has supported.

TTITE oppose the Townsend plan solely because we are con-
vineed it will not work, that the roseate promises it makes,
of affluence for some, and security for all, can NOT, by the
nature of things be fulfilled; and those who however sincerely
believe otherwise, are doomed to disillusion and disappointment.
However we arc not going explain why we believe this to be
true, today, but are going to let another editor do so, one of the
most able and distinguished editors in the country, and one who,
by the way, ORIGINALLY favored the Townsend plan.
Tha editor in question is William Allen White of the Em
poria (Kansas) Gazette. If anything can contribute toward
clearing the atmosphere on this matter by calmly and in a
kindly fashion reasoning it out,
do so, for it comes from a friend
and one whose sincere devotion to the welfare of the people of
this country, young and old, can not be questioned.
Here it is:
Dr. P. B. Townsend. lanky, Idealistic llttla doctor whoaa old
age penalon proposal swpt the country a few montha ago. testi
fied laat week In behalf of hla plan before the congressional
committee which will submit the president's security proposal.
There Is no reason to doubt Dr. Townsend'a sincerity. He la
aa sincere aa Lincoln, Washington. Jesus, Insult, Hitler and thou
sands of others who have risen to power because of their deep
convictions.
Yet Just because Dr. Townsend and the others are sincere la
In Itself no defense of their Idess no resson why we shouldn't
sort out the ood and destroy the bad.
Dr. Townsend'a plan to give many million old people 1300 a
month for the rest of their lives rests on the notion that you
can create something out of nothing that money can be apent
without coating any of us anything.
He would raise his funds and on this part of hta plan he
himself Is har.y by a general salea tax. Economists figure that
It would cost 34 billions per yesr. Now the combined prlvat
Incomes of every one In the United States last year amounted to
only 48 billions. So the ssles Ux would have to be practically
equal to the present value of the article.
How would this affect youf It would mean that you could
afford to buy. on your present salary or Income Just half as
much food, clothing, gasoline and manufactured articles aa you
bought last year. The rest of your Income would be taken from
you by the government to pay the old people each 300 per
month.
But. Dr. Townsend argues, the old people would have t
spend this money every month and this would restore prosperity.
Well how. exactly? It would be taken from th rest of us In
taxes so we could only buy half as much as we do now. It
would be .pent by the old people for things which old people
want. It would be at the expense of all the rest of us.
Prosperity will only return when all of us get bsck to work,
producing things which we and other Americans wsnt. Dividing
up our present nstlonal Income, tsklng It from some and giving
It others, csn hsve no possible effect one way or the other on
prosperity, although the Townsend proponents, the bonus treas
ury raiders snd other groups who hope to get on the receiving
end of the tavpavers' money always loudly proclaim, and usually
with sincerity, that giving them cash would solve the depression
linmedlately.
Some sort of liberal old age pension should he adopted by .
this congress as a measure of soclsl justice. It should have been
done yeara ago. as it was In Europe. But It will do nothing to
help prosperity. The tolsl national Income will remain the
eame. The rest of us will have less to epend for the things we
want. In order that these old people can have the security
which a pension of av or M per month would mean lo them.
But we mustn't kid ourselvra about that. We aren t llrlng In
fairy land, and the multiplication table still stsnds.

kraut, but always when she ordered
