OF HECT1C CLASH
37-32 Victory Comes in
Overtime Period After
Foul Gives Howell Chance
to Cage Tieing Point
In a thrilling overtime period be
fore a large delegation of wild-eyed '
rooters, the Ashland Normal basket-,
ball five last night defeated a fast-
breaking and aggressive Monmouth
Normal quint, 37-32. Monmouth led
at halt time, 16-14. after both teams;
had see-sawed back and forth in
the vantage position. Soon after the
start of the second half, however,
Courtney flipped one in from under
the bucket to tie things up at 16
all, and the SONS then ran the
score to 26-19 before Monmouth was
able to rally.
With the Monmouth rally bringing
thera to only four points behind the
Hobsonltes, the referee ruled that
Howell had knocked a Wolf offering
out of the basket, and two points
were allowed the northerners to make
It 29-27, and a foul called on Jocklsh
gave them two more to put the
teams In a tie, at 29-all. With only
a few seconds loft to play, the teams
were in a mad scramble, and a foul
was called on Howell, giving Mon
mouth a free throw, and a one
point advantage. From under the
basket Howell tipped a desperate one
through, It swishing the cords Just
as the gun sounded.
Basket Ruled Out.
The Ashland rooters went wild
with Joy, as they thought the game
had been won by the one-point
margin that would have been theirs,
hftd the basket counted. The referee
ruled, however, that Howell had
been fouled by Osborne, diminutive
Wolf guard, ond the basket was dis
allowed, but one free throw, and a
chance to tie the score at 30-all,
given Howell.
Quite a furore resulted from the
decision, the Normalltes insisting
upon getting the second and a hall
playing time which they believed to
be their due, counting the time from
when the foul occurred, to when
the gun sounded. This was allowed,
but was unnecessary, as the giant
Howell, always a "money player,
swUbed the free throw to tie the
score.
In the overtime period Monmouth
scored on a field goal by Osborne,
and Howell, again shooting a foul,
made one point, and Immediately
followed It with a crlpplo under the
ring to give Ashland a one-point ad
vantage, 33-32. With the score In
that position, McLean, Indian flash,
swished a beautiful long one to put
the game In the refrigerator, and
Howell's next toss' from under the
net made It a cinch, a few seconds
before the game ended.
42 Personals,
The game was rough and fast, 42
personal tosses being attempted, and
the sons were not up to their usual
standard, apparently suffering from

ably te best timed maneuver to be
seen on the Ashland floor this year.
One man, standing in the center
of the floor flicked tht ball side
ways to a team mate near the side
line. That man, without even look

head to another standing tn the
