day on an adverse report, five mem
bers of the committee voting to kill
the bill while four were favorable.
Hamilton Tells Aim.
Should the house make sufficient
progress in disposing of Its own
messures. there will be no attempt
today to stop work upon the 30
senate measures now up for final
consideration, Representative Moore
Hamilton, Jackson county, leader In
the house "rebellion" against the
senate's apparent unwillingness to
bring house bills out of senate com
mittees, said today. There Is n use
In needlessly holding up the work
of the legislature, but It became
necessary to show the senate what
could be done by the house, he said.
Seven messures were killed on ad
verse committee reporta today. In
cluding Representative Oleen'a reve
nue producing bill by Increasing cor
poration excise taxes. Others killed
provided for appropriating money
for the remodeling and fire-proofing
of the state penitentiary; providing
for the establishment of unemploy
ment and social Insurance, and a
memorial requesting congress to
chango the name of the Bonnovllle
dam to the "Columbia Roosevelt
dam," all originating In the house.
ees End of Parties.
The house Bill which provided for
the non-partlsnn election of county
school superintendents drew consider
able argument, Senator Allan Bynon
of Multnomah county stating that It
was tha opening wedge for the doing
away with party government, and
that there was no need for such
legislation.
Senator James E. Hnzlctt of Hood
River declared that schools should
be taken entirely out of party poli
tics. "There la no resson why county
school superintendents should be
elected on a partisan platform," he
declared.
"The strength of our government
is based upon parties." Senator Dell,
more Leasard declared. "If we take
out the county school superlnten1
dents we might as well take out our
state legislators. We must keep tome
offices on the partisan ballot. We
might make this office non-partisan,
but we cannot make It non-factional."
The senate turned down two other
measures providing for the nori-par-tlsan
election of district attornevs
and county auditor of Multnomah
county. The vote was 33 to 6 on the
former and 19 to 0 on the latter.
Virtually the same arguments were
advanced aa on the county auperln-
tenuent mil.
A bill providing for the rotation of
namea on the general election ballot
waa voted down. Senator Zimmerman
favored the measure because It would
Rive each candidate a chance to have
nis name at the top of the ballot.

York, Wiley cut off the motor, and
landed silently In Muroc dry lake.
But let Wiley tell what happened
About 400 yards away was a fel
low repairing his auto, that had
broken down. I saw him as I ' was
coming down. He was working on
the motor and his head was under
the hood.
"He didn't see me land. Be didn't
hear me as I walked toward him,
I was right at hia side, and tapped
him on the shoulder before he real
ized there was anyone near.
The man's knee buckled, he al
most fell over. The sight of me in
this rubber pressure suit, with the
oxygen helmet, was a little too much
for his heart. He ran around to the
back of his auto and peered at me.
Finally, he got up enough courage to
step from behind the machine, and I
waa able to convince him everything
was all right. I told htm I wanted
help and he helped me locate the
airplane factory In Los Angeles.
"Gosh, fellow," the man said to
Post. "I was frightened stiff.
thought you had dropped out of the
moon, or somewhere."
