Chapter 20
DANGEROUS TRICK
ONTANA sprang Into the near
est casement. Below him, the
wall dropped a giddy height. There
were no stars. A moon was up, but
it only llKhteo the swirling confti'
Ion of the storm clouds which h.d
spread out of the east until almost
the entire sky was covered, ousty,
warm breaths of the coming storm
truck Into the face of the Kid.
He dropped to bis knees and
neered Into the dimness below blm.
Then the hand of Rubrls fell on his
boulder.
"This Is a thing 1 have always
known," said the outlaw "that one
day I should be In such a place, with
so escape, and the enemy all before
me. and behind me a cliff that could
not be climbed. Well, San Juan of
Caplstrano has been my friend, but
now be Is tired, perhaps. Let us be
ready to die together, like men. Let
us pile up the dead!"
"Look!" said Montana. "There Is
a ledge here, under the window. It
Is wide enough for a man to He on'
If tbe man uses care It Is almost ft
foot wide It 1p. more than a foot
wide you see 7"
"Misery of my soul!" breathed
the bandit, peering down through
tbe darkness beside bis frle-id. "Lie
there? Even a bird with wing, would
be afraid to He there."
"It has to be this way, or are we
to surrender to bad luck, Mateo?
I'll bow you the way!"
Aa he did through the window,
the first gust of the rain struck him.
Tbe big, wind-swept drops drove
through his clothing Instantly to tbe
kin, and m-de blm tremble. Then
bis feet found the ledge. It was
yard and a half below the window
and consisted merely of the space
left when the wall receded In one
of Its set-backs, of which there were
several between tbe bottom and the
top.
"Follow me, Mateo!" he called,
"It Is possible to stand on IL Let
yourself down. Stand with your toes
on the outsloe of the ledge to slant
your body In against the wall. And
then-
He could not apeak again, for the
outer door to the rooms . tbe gov.
ernor now went down with ft prodl'
glous crash. He saw Mateo's bulky
form swing down from the window;
Then the Mexican was besMe blm,
edging In pursuit as he worked bis
way cautiously along tbe narrow
ledge.
Overhead, there was thundering
of footfalls. A light swung out from
the window almost Instantly and dis
appeared again. It flashed from an
other window around the corner of
the tower, ft radiance that glittered
for a moment through the slant lines
of the falling rain.
And then the wind came 1 ft bil
low and with a, booming sound and
began to pr. at Montana tn loosen
him from his hold. -
Heaven; Kind San Juan remem
ber me!" gasped Rubrlt. I am so
longer bad. I am only ft poor, fat
foolish old man. If I must die, let me
at least have my bands In the throat
of another man. Gentle San Juan,
do not let Rubrls die Is the com
pany of gringo, only!"
But he followed that naive prayer
by saying, Instantly: "No other man
u the world would have risked him
self to grab at me then!"
It must have been your saint wno
made me do It," answered the Kid.
And he chuckled a little, till the
violence of the wind and the rush
ing of the rain filled his eyes and his
throat.
Death of my soul!" he heard Ru-
brls saying. "He laughs!"
SEES HARD TASK
ALL Jl
HE came to the corner of tbe
tower. And here the ledge dis
appeared. It did not turn onto tbe
other side of the wall. So that they
were utterly c locked and held, here,
to s standstill.
- But Mateo wat obeerful, beside
him.
"I was wrong!" sail' Rubrlt.
"That saint of Caplstrano, that fel
low Is not one to lose heart. He will
make this as wide as a road to us
nd "
Here the voice went out of blm.
Tbe wind, screaming suddenl.-, stag
gered Rubrli so that be fought for
bis balance with swinging arms on
the verge of tbe foothold. And Mon
tana, digging his feet -itrongly in on
tbe edge of the rock, getting a par
tial handhold on the corner mason
ry of tbe toner, reached out with
bis left hand and pulled at the big
Mexican.
The pull and the Jar of the wind
swung hlin sldewlse so that the
storm could get at him more fully.
His left foot slipped from Its pur
chase. He waited (or the next gust
to tear him loose. But as It bad
come suddenly, so tbe wlud eased
tor a moment, while the handhold
of Montana still heli good.
He regained bis former position.
with Rubrls now despcratel) flat

spread out.

The general bad come Ilk- a whirl
wind as soon as the alarm reached
him, and with him poured In the
eleven young officers who had been
drinking In their mess-halL O'hers
officers, servants, private soldiers-
formed a solid pack with tbe gen
eral, but be rushed through tbem
and ran stralgbt to the closet In
which bis safe was standing. There
he slammed the door In the faces of
the rest
Speechless, awful fear worked in
his throat. He could hardl) lit the
key Into tbe old lock. But at last the
heavy door swung wide and made ft
little moaning sound that shot de
spair through the heart of Ignaclo
Estrada.
HQ pulled open the one drawer
that really mattered, and tbere
be found, by the blind grarp of bis
bands, the treasure. Only when his
hands had closed on It was ha able
to look. And now he saw It again,
clearly, tbe seml-ctrcle which had
broken when he tore It from its
place .vltb the eyj of the brown
image looking up towards blm in
resignation and in pain.
Tbe general crowded tbe treasure
back Into its chamois bag. With tbe
door of the safe still open, be re
mained on bla knees for a moment.
allowln. tbe sickness to pass from
bis heart, while his attitude was
that of olo In prayer.
He had been ft fool to keep tbe
emeralds ao long, bargaining with
the "fences" wbo were willing to
receive the stolen goods at a certain
price. After all, they were only nat
ural in wishing to make their profit.
Finally, be was able to get to his
feet, close and lock the old safe. It
was madness, he thought, to keep
such valuables in sucb an ntlquated
place of safe-keeping! That would
be his first step to demand a mod
ern sate, to preserve safely the pay
of the soldiers which had to pass
through his hands.
After he had come to these con
clusions he took two or three deep
breaths and then rubbed the color
Into his swarthy cheeks and gave
few turns to bis prodlglour mustaches.
When he had shrugged bis Bhoul-
dera more snugly Into bis tight un
form coat the general strode out of
tbe closet wblcb held tbe sate, and
went Into the outer rooms. He was
Indignant aa be saw tbe crowd
which ailed the chambers. And he
said to Don Luis, that thin-faced
major who bad been overseer In tbe
tormenting of Rubrlz, "Clear the
rooms!"
It was done at once. Only ft few
officers remained, and an armed
guard outside the broken door. The
sign of the shattered wood stirred
the general more than bloodshed
i battle-field. It was only when
be had seated himself in his big
throne-like chair, bowever, that ha
began to ask questions.
Sergeant Andres waa tbe first to
be called. Black blood was still dried
on his wrists. His features remained
discolored. Yet bis eyes were clear
and courageous.
Because of his courage, ratbet
than his discretion, he told a clear,
straight!, ward story, from the mo-
ment when the tapping was heard
at tbe postern to that time when be
bad nearly suffocated and vet bad
continued to work at tbe gag until
It was loosened and he was able to
cry out for help.
The jeneral said, "What tapping
could have called you out from your
post?"
"Tbere Is a gin Is the Inn next to
tbe fort, 1 told her that if she ever
tapped In a certain way, 1 would
speak to her."
The general was so angered that
he almost leaped up from his chair
And his officers muttered together
sympathetically.

Whther you are "a Dr. Townsend,
with an old sue plan or a Senator
Huey Long with a share-the-wealth
program," said Mrs. F. D. Roosevelt,
in an address on Cornell farm and
home week program today "you are
going to be stumped when it comes
to outlining a program of how to
gtve every human being a Job who
wants It."
"My generation has a responsibil
ity for today's youth which it can
not escape," she said, addressing
3,000 persons In Bailey hall where a
"standing room only" sign was hung
out half an hour before the addreBs
was scheduled.
"We have undertaken to say that
Individuals shall neither starve
freeze. But all of us are doing
rather poor Job of It. All over the
country today, while people are not
actually starving, there are people
and children growing up Improperly
fed, Improperly housed, and Improp
erly clothed. Families are moving
constantly because there s no sta
bility or security In life. Children
are struggling through these things
and looking for work and there is
no work.
"Now somewhere there is the ex
planatlon and the reason for this,
and we have got to find It."

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15. (AP)
The National Retail Lumber dealers
association criticized Jamea A. Mof
fett'a administration of the new
housing act today before the house
banking committee.
I-, P. Level, of Cincinnati, secre
tary of the association, told the
committee:
"The housing act became a law
and waa put into operation nearly
eight months ago, and I am frank to
say that we have not yet got the re
sults thit we anticipated.
"Mr. Moffett is laboring under dif
ficulties, but I don't think Mr. Mof
fett has gotten up to this time the
best results he could under this act.
"I don't think he has had the nec
essary experience he Is primarily an
oil man and he doesn't have around
htm the men who have got the ex
perience. We have tried to give htm
some advice, but we have not had
much success."
