Although he has never taken up
writing as a profession, Mr. Chandler
has had short stories published In
Liberty, Short Stories, West and
American Forest magazines.
Anna Belle Smith
Of Evans Valley
Mourned By Many
Anna Belle Smith passed away Feb
ruary 4, after several hours ol coma
caused by a stroke of paralysis. Burial
took place in the Rogue River ceme
tery. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Smith came
to Oregon from Missouri about 188a,
and have lived in Evans valley on
their present ranoh ever since, brav
ing the hardships of early days and
raising a family pf six children to
womanhood and manhood In th"s
community.
Two children preceded Mrs. Smith
to the great beyond, after having
reached woman and manhood, Mrs.
Susan O'Brien and David Smith.
Three daughters and one ion sur
vive their mother, besides a devo;eO
husband and several grandchildren.
The daughters are -Mrs. Alice Cas
per of Tacoma, Mrs. Nellie Reeve c.t
Alaska, and Mrs. Stella Heller of
southern Oregon. The son, Sidney I
Roy Smith, makes his home here.
The family have the sympathy of
many old friends in their berca.e

Thtrty-Heven little personages of
the Inanimate worlo were escorted to
school on that day by their loving
little mothers (and fathers, too)
where they were presented In a most
formal manner. There were Just lots
more dolls at home, however, who
did not feel socially Inclined, it was
revealed. In order to appear at their
very best at the exhibition during the
languapo period In the afternoon, the
dolls were laid In bed In a quiet
room of the school building, where
they might relax and indulge In
beauty Bleep until the formal hour.
Only a few were aroused for a few
moments during tlie noon period.
Every dolly was introduced by her
proud owner, who told when she re
eclved the toy, from whom, the name,
and many other phases of the life
story. A mcssnge of particular Inter
est from the Orient was brotiht about
through the appearance of a two-inch
Japanese doll whose round little tum
my suggested that she does not count
calories, but haa cultivated a charm-
lng personality Instead. There were
many very beautiful dolls, some at
taining & height of 24 Inches. Three,
whose very dnrk complexion bespoke

the south, met and mingled with the
rest.
Fritzle Offenbacher, one of the
three small boys bringing dolls, voic
ed regret that his ebony-skinned
Topsy flaunted an orange ribbon on
her wearing apparel which did not
harmonize as well as the red one she
had lost. '
Every dolly was groomed to the nth
degrees for the occasion, one scrupu
lous owner stating that she had
washed and Ironed for her small
charge the day before. Many of the
Christmas dolls, however, had been
laid away caretully through tlie long
weeks in anticipation of the Import
ant event, and literally presented a
band-box appearance. Pupils enjoyed
candy presented by Mrs. Ludwlg as
the climax ot tho day.
Doll day promises to become an an
nual event, and was established last
year at the Applegate school. Thera
has been serious consideration of In
stituting "car day," when the boys
would display their favorite toy, but
It has been decreed that whore the
more vigorous toys are enncerned,
every day may be car day If active
young minds are so Inclined.
