Farley has a way with him. He has
mastered the art of friendliness with
out ostentation. Disagree with him
at a distance, and you'll find yourself
sliding Into mental reverse beneath
the warmth of his broad, kindly
smile.
For one thing, he Is uncritical of
his erring fellow men. That has Its
appeal. On the other band, he seems
willing to singly take It on the chin
for the combined faults and mistakes
of an entire administration. But be
ing the goat seems to appeal to Far
ley's sense of humor. He realises,
perhaps, that his silence under fire,
gets the goats of his critics worse
than their sometimes unfair charges
does his own.
The postmaster general's press con
ferences are unique. They remind
one of a football huddle. Coming In
late, one sees a great big room spar
ingly furnished. This Is Farley's pri
vate office. Over at one end of the
room Is a bunch of boys, their arms
around each other, leaning toward
the center of the circle.
There la a mumble of voices ending
rhythmically In Interrogating Inflec
tions. This It Invariably followed by
a short staccato answer, not infre
quently resulting in a oborus of
laughs. It goes on and on. From the
opposite side of the room, one won
ders why they dorCt get their signal i
straightened out, stop the wise cracks
and play ball.
On closer Inspection however It
turns out to be not a football eleven,
but some forty or more members of
the press having the time of their
lives. They are wedged In that circle
like sardines. Farley site In the cen
ter, turning his neck and his shrewd
green eyes in all directions as he an
swers their battery of questions. The
nearest reporters are not more than
six Inches away.
The girl reporters If thev not
there early enough, are allowed to oc
cupy three or four chairs directly In
iront or his desk, thereby getting s
head-on view of the seated executive
If they don't they can take their
chances craning necks with the rest
of the crowd.
The boys yesterday were having lota
or run over the much-publlclzed crit
icism of Farley and Attorney General
Curamlngs, that had unwittingly
been allowed to come out In soma of
Secretary of the Interior Ickes' press
relenses. Ickes had sent a letter of
apology to the two cabinet members.
"Did you accept his apology, Gen
eral?" the reporters asked.
"I received a letter from Mr. Ickes."
said Farley with a poker countenance.

ing creature Indeed. Sitting demurely
In one corner of the reception room

ence commenced, the woman had the
reporters In a state of suppressed
convulsions.

platted In the back. She wore a dark,
coarse wool costume, fashioned along

Was this "gay." young thing (smart
orack, smart crack) going to favor the
press with a Terpalchorean outburst?
Or was she merely In search of some
choice Items for her home town pa
per? The reporters killed time in
smothered conjectures while they
awaited the opeutng of a much-be
lated press conference. (Mrs. Roose
velt Is usually on the dot too.)
The flaming hatred one, It turned
out, was the guest of Mrs. Roosevelt
for the conference. The First Lady
got acquainted with her for the first
time along with the reporters. She
had wanted to learn more of her phil
osophy for some time, anyway.
And when Madame Slkellanoe co
author with her husband, of the fam
ous Delphic movement In Greece
finished, the reporters agreed tha
she was not only one of the most in
teresting guests to date, but that aha
was actually beautiful.

loathe to predict what the future of
the G. O. P. will or should be. Pro
gressives like Congressman Jajnes
Mott, It seems, would out liberalise
the most liberal New Dealers. But he
Is more frank and outspoken than
most.
Representative Edith Nourse Rogers
of Massachusetts saya this la no time
to venture a prediction.
"There la no such thing as Demo
crat and Republican any more," saya
she. "We are simply all too busy
working toward recovery to think In

Speak of National Chairman Henry
Fletcher, however, and even tha moat
phlegmatic Republican will turn some
kind of a color. Either he will end up
by making excuses for Henry, or will
venture an opinion that the present
national chairman la just filling a
temporary gap.

are lota of Republicans who wonder
"who put him In," anyway. Still more
troubled minds are worrying over who
will take him out.
