James Oliver Curwood, whose tal?i
of the north woods have brought him
fame and fortune, has one of his
most vivid stories on the screen of
the Rialto theater for today and Sat
urday. "The Trail Beyond." adapted
from the novel, 'The Wolf Hunters,"
has been made Into a stirring drama
of the Yukon country, with John
Wayne as the star and Noah Beery.
his son Noah, Jr., Varna Htllte and
Robert Frascr in the leading support
ing roles.
Successfully combining the action
of the conventional western with the
splendid dramatic power of Curwood'
deep knowledge of the north, the
film should prove entertaining to ft
marked degree.
Fishing on Illinois Harry Rlna-
barger was one of the local Izaik

SCREEN
REVIEW
(By Dirk Applcgate.)-
"The Mighty Bernum," starring
Wallace Beery, opened before an en
thusiastic house last night at the
Craterian, for a decidedly novel and
entertaining picture, Jammed with
the wild events of the hectic career
of the master showman of all Amer
ican history.
The picture moves swiftly, the
scene being laid in New York a hun
dred years ago. The beginning of tha
peculiar twist in the Barmim nature
which attracted his imagination to
the outlandish .and bizarre freaks
that later mado several fortunes. Is
portrayed, and from that point for
ward there Isn't a dull moment.
Beery carries the role to perfection.
Bamum Is shown as a good-natured
but blundering genius with a knack
of putting on shows that the people
will pay to see, and a large collec
tion of interesting freaks help make
the picture authentic.
Adolph Menjou again scores a hit.

makes one wonder why he waa ever
wasted on the sticky-sweet parts that
he used to portray on the screen. The
cast of the whole show Is perfect,
with Menjou and Beery outstanding
The burning of Barn urn's old Amer
ican museum Li startllngly and thrill-
inly done, with the fight to get the ;
animals from the flaming buildings ;
one of the most realistic to come to i
the screen In some time.
One of tho most cleverly turned
scenes In the picture Is when Bir- ,
num sends Menjou to England to pro
cure Jumbo, the biggest elephant on I
earth, for the show. The day that
the elephant Is supposed to arrive
dawns, and Bernum meets the boat I
with a brass band and flornl offer
ings saying "Welcome, Jumbo." only
to find that Instead of Jumbo he
has acquired the "Swedish Nlnghtln-
gale," Jenny Llnd. Be makes the
most of this, only to lose her through
an unfortunate blunder, after she
has become the toast of American
society.
While never having heard Jenny
Und, at least Virginia Bruce, who
jflays the part, was convincing to me,
and added to the general enjoyment.
Swell for grown -lips and kids alike.
And, by the way, Ruth Luy's winter
dance recital Is an c tided attraction
at 0 o'clock tonight, with the showing
of 'The Mighty Bamum.
