ing Tuesday and was fortunate In
shooting one.
Mr. and Mrs. Dowd of Eugene were
dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hender
son Jan. 14 and on Wednesday night
Mr. and Mrs. Henderson were dinner
guesta of Mr. ad Mra. Dowd at the
Medford Hotel and enjoyed a theatre
party afterward. Mrs. Dowd and
Mrs. Henderson were girlhood friends
when they lived In Seattle.
The Rogue River basketball team
of the high school went to Phoenix
Friday night where they won. 37 to 9.

position In the league standings, with
four wins and no defeats. They will
meet Phoenix again Feb. 22.
It Is reported that Mrs. Martha
Stead la still very ill, her daughter,
Mrs. Marlon Lance of Foots Creek Is
staying there caring for her mother.
James Whipple came down Monday
from the mine up Pleasant Creek snd
reports two feet of snow there.
The Rogue River Civic Improve
ment club will meet at the home of
Mra. Fowler Friday, Jan. 35. when a
program on Russia will be presented.
A dance for the benefit of the
Rogue River basketball team of the
high school will be given Saturday
night and the executive committee
of the Girl Scouts will serve the sup
per, the proceeds to go to the finish
ing of the Scou. home.

moved from the Glenn Morse houe

and Mr. Morse and family will move
to their home from the McVay home

On Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, 32

On Sunday afternoon four carloads
of young people from the- Presbyterian
church went to Ashland where they
attended the Endeavor meeting.
A carnival will bo staged at the
high school Friday night where every
one will be able to enjoy all kinds
of fun. The proceeds will go to the
basketball team.
Little Miss Dorrls Bedford came
from Medford Saturday and will stay
some time with her grandmother.

After a moment, while tbe echoes
wero still dimly flying, a voice al
most at bis elbow aald: "Well,
brother, who's hungry nowT Whose
bellyache are you to tell ua about
now?"
"Is It Luis?" asked the friar.
"Luis went spying once too often
Into the stockyards at Cblhunbua.
Tbey killed him In the slaughter
house. Maybe they made him Into
sausage."
"What Is your name? Ah, yon are
Carlos!"
"You've only seen me once; and
It's too dark for seeing now, unless
you're a cat How do you remember

answered Carlos.

HE strides of Brother Pascual were lonft
and swift, but the day strode longer and
swifter by far to its ending.
Shadows as blue as water were flowing
through the ravines, rising higher and
higher, and the naked summits of the San
Carlos range began to burn with rose and
with golden flame against that Mexican
sky; but the friar, taking a stronger hold
on the staff which was his companion in
the wilderness, gave little heed to the
he fended bis course through them
until he came out on a lovel valley
floor, with a stippling of lights near
by giving a vague outllno ot a house.
He beard singing and shouting
and the beat of running feet while
he was still In the distance, and
though ha once pledged to love good

When he came to the door of the

rumbled through the bouse, and tben

"Bring In Pascuall" shouted the
familiar, strident tones of Mateo
Rubrli. Haifa doxen wild young fel
lows leaped through tbe doorway
and selxed on the burly trlar and
drew hint Into tbe room. It was tbe
kitchen, dlnlng-hall, and reception
chamber of Mateo Rubrls.
As a chorus of welcome rose to
greet Brother Pascual, be snuffed up
at the fragrance of roasting kid-
most delicious of all meat In this
world; and the savor of frljoles
cooked with peppers, and the pun
gency of coffee, and the thin scent
ot beer and tbe sour of wine all
were In that air.
At the long table some of the men
were still eating; others looked on

head was battered but not broken.
"Come here and dip your hands
Into that sack all gold and take
out the fill ot your big hands. You
j can weight down your pockets and
spena it an on your poor, uip in
your bands as deep as tbe wrists
and pull out what your fingers will
hold. Come, Pascual! Hal, my chil
dren! We shall all be a thousand
leagues nearer to heaven when
Brother Pascual has prayed for us."
Brother Pascual stood by the ban-

and Mexicans are the only men."
He made a gesture, and some of
the wine slopped out ot the cup and
splashed from the floor onto the
bare calves of bis legs.
"Do you hear me, Pascual? I shall
be such a saint one day that they'll
have to shift In their chairs and
crowd their balos closer together to
make room for Mateo Ruhris!"
