MEDFOTtD MAIL TRTBTTXE, MEDFORD. OREGON. TTTURSDAT, JANUARY 17, 1935
Notice apprising dog owners of i
Jackson county that dog licenses were
now due and payable will be posted
hortly by the county clerk. The fee
U 1 tor males and $1.50 for females,!
The county court is contemplating
plans for the more thorough collec
tion of dog licenses. One plan calls
for assignment of & deputy sheriff to
work of collecting licenses. Last year
Jackson county paid out $63 more
for sheep killed by dogs than It took j
In for dog licenses. The county hopes ;
under the proposed order to at least '
break even the coming year.
Under Oregon law, cities are en-!
titled to 80 per cent of the dog license i
collections, the county providing the!
licenses, the tags and the clerical
work. The law wa Intended to spur
municipalities to larger collections.
There waa no noticeable Increase, of
ficials report. This year. It It hoped !
to gain more co-operation.
In 1934 close to 300 sheep were ,
lain by dogs. Sheepmen claim the
loss waa caused by unlicensed dogs
and offer as proof dogs killed while ;
slaughtering sheep. They further i
claim that the dogs run wild In ;
bands and have no homes or masters.
They would like to see them exter
minated. Most of the sheep killing I
by dogs has occurred near cities and i
towns, giving rise to the theory the i
killers are derelict town dogs.
Last year only 16 dog l.c-.:es were
Issued In this county, and It Is esti
mated there are 2500 dogs of all de
scriptions. Some of the rural resi
dents have as high as ten dogs about
the place, It Is claimed. County of
ficials say that unless a dog 1& a
child's pet or a hunting dog he sel
dom -tears a license tag.
