St. Mary's Boasts Many

burg Has New System
By Harold Groie.
For their second game of this Ma
eon, the red and black Tlgermen
from Medford high school wilt trade
hoop rlngera with the itrong and
highly polished St. Mary'a All-Stars
tonight at a o'clock at the Medford
high school gym. On Saturday night
the Tlgermen will face their first
real conference teat of the season
against the atrong Roseburg Indians,
starting at 9 o'clock at the Medford
high school gym. Preliminaries will
be played both nights, Friday night
starting at 7 o'clock and Saturday
night at 8 o'clock.
The game Saturday ntght Is being
held at 9 o'clock for the purpose or
giving business men and shoppers a
chance to attend without having to
sidestep any already scheduled busi
ness. When referring to the All-Stars as
such, one can truly stat them as
Medford All-Stars, for the squad in
cludes Bud Lindley and Odd Hughes
members of the Medford high team
which went to the state tourna
ment In Salem three yenra ago and
nearly copped the state pennant.
Lloyd Hammock, a member of the
squad that went to the tournament
In 1933: Wayne Harris, also a mem
ber of the squad that went to the
tournament In 1933; Dick Lewis, one
of the line of Lewis, who for so long
dominated the sporta world at the
. St. Mary'a academy: Bob Lewis,
brother of Dick, and alao a member
of the wonder teams at St. Msry's.
who with George Smith and Dick
Sskralda kept the ball rolling on
the courts of the academy.
There remain two members who
didn't break Into the limelight as
often as did the above named, but
were Indirectly responsible for the
success of the already named stars, j
Jerry Trill and Hoke Curttss, who
were members of the shock troops
that every night during their high
school days stayed out end absorbed
basketball knowledge and served aa
opponents In the dally scrimmages
that are so vital to any successful
basketball team. Lindley served as
center on the Tiger lineup while In
school, Hughes as forward, Hammock
as center and guard, Harris as cen
ter and forward, Curttss ai forward
and Trill aa guard. Dick Lewis, Bob
Lewis as forwards and guards. Smith
as guard and Sakralda as guard.
Coach Burgher stated that his boy.
were In the best shape possible fo;
the game.
According to reports from the city
of Roseburg the Indians will Invade
the lair of the Medford Tigers with
a new system designed by their new
coach, Bill Warren. The Indiana have
practically the aame lineup they
had last year when they played the
Tigers. Thus far the Indians have
won two and lost two. The two wins,
however, were over the strong Uni
versity high of Eugene, and the two
losses were sustained In games played j
with secondary teams In which the
Roseburg coach stated he was merely j
speculating for rough spots and new
material.

ELKS WILL START
T
A new bowling tournament, to
continue until May 17, will get under
way at the Elks' club tonight with
the City Meat Market and Mason
Ehrman teams meeting In the open
ing match. There will be 14 6-man
teams competing for Individual and
team prizes to be awarded each week,
besides the substantial tournament
prizes to be awarded at the end of
the schedule.
Becsuse of the Increased interest
shown In bowling and the necessity
of forming additional teams. Chair
man Roy Prultt of the lodge bowl
ing committee, has divided the
schedule Into 13 "weeks," with seven
matches In each. As there will be no
bowling on Thursday ni?hts, how
ever, the schedule "weeks" will not
conform to calendar wpeks.
At a meeting of the bowling com
mittee this week captains were
named and teams made up by allo
cating the howlers on a bnsls or
ability, as established In the tourna
ment Just ended. This method hiis
proved entirely fair and satisfactory
in the past and It Is believed thnt
with this system and the additional
fnctor of applying handicaps on the
basis of each week's performances,
each team will have an equal chance
to fdiarn In the prizes.

The recent day-after-Chrlstmas
Notre Dame-Stanford game was put
up to the squad, the athletic officials
hesitating to schedule a game so
soon after the holidays unless the
players wanted It. The vote stood
15-0 In favor. And Not Dame won.
29-19.
Five minutes, lammed full of rab-i
uit jjunt-neo ana weu-nirecioa drop
kicks, was too much for Tony Cata
lano, rough-house Italian grappler.
and very nearly spelled ruin aa well
for Referee Ray Frlsble. when Pete
BMcasro, the original wild Italian,
got off some of the best fancy kick
ing of his career to win the third
and deciding fall of the main event
match last night at the armory.
After connecting with Catalano's
midriff with no less than four of his
double-leg punches, Pete miscalcu
lated one and knocked the wind from
Frlsble, but held his opponent to the
mat with a press until the referee
was finally able to award him the
fall.
Bel cast ro. displaying more orthodox
wrestling than he has used in any
one bout for some time, had things
well In hand during most of the con
test, but was given some rough treat
men that very nearly cost him the
tussle. He won the first fall In two'
minutes, when the referze refused to
let Catalano get away with any more
of the choke holds he insisted on
applying.
Tony, weighing 215 against Pete's
191!, took the second tumble with
an airplane spin in 15 minutes. It
was ons of the very few times that
Catalano resorted to g?nulne wrest
ng tactics, using fists and teeth
throughout most of the fray.
The middle fall saw Belcastro open
hostilities by tweaking the paunchv
Catalano's mustnehe. Then Belcas
tro cleverly applied a leg split.
reached under Catalano's belt, pro
cured some of the mysterious "pep
per" with whicn Tony is wont to
blind some of his opponents, and
treated the big choke and chuckle art
ist to some of hl own medicine.
Catalano was kept scampering out
of the ring by Petes sudden attacks
of Ronnenbergs. Whenever Belcastro
hit the ropes, out went Catalano, very
nearly coming to grief once when
three or lour of the spectators threat
ened to "crown" him with their
chairs.
Joe Hubka. popular ex-athlete from
University ofa Nebraska, took two
straight falls in the semi-final from
Jimmy High of Chicago, chunky new
comer to the Pacific coast.
The cornhusker used a giant
swing and a body press to end the
second fall In two minutes, after the
two had used several flying mares
that shook the platform.
A series of Sonnenbergs and a press
was good for the first fall, after I9'i
minutes of hard and fairly clean
grappling. High, however, displayed
a deb I re for choking and biting that
gave Hukba some trouble.
But the 204-pound Nebraska lad's
two years' experience at left end on
his state university grid squad, and
his training later unaer Joe Stecher,
ex-world champion grappler, stood
him In good stead.
Promoter Mack Lll!ard announced
that, due to the Shnners' circus, com
ing to Mfdford for a week's engage
ment at the armory starting January
14. there will be no wrestling card
next Thursday night.
