WASHINGTON, Dec. 28. (AP)
President Roosevelt's day like that
of most folks has a high and low
of personal enjoyment.
Around the clock, there's one mo
ment he likes best. It comes In the
late afternoon when, on the way
from the executive office to the
White House proper to prepare for
dinner, he stops at the swimming
pool, and then plunges Into Its warm
water for a rollicking half hour ol
water polo.
The bad moments come later tn
the evening when he finds his swal
low-tall, studs and other formal at
tire laid out. He doesn't like to
struggle Into this outfit, and he
doesn't mlrd saying so, Except for
the demands of winter's social sea
ton he'd escape It.
Awakens Early
With Mr. Roosevelt, the day be
gins at 7 or shortly thereafter and
for the next few hours his bedroom
la his office. While having breakfast
In bed a habit of long-standing
he reads current events In seven or
lght newspapers, Including New York
and Washington publications.
Often the more Immediate mem
bers of the official family call by on
the way to their desks for talks.
This group includes Post-Master
General Farley, Secretaries Morgen
thau, Hull and Ickes, and Donald
Blchberg, director of the emergency
council.
Usually while he shaves and he
shaves himself the secretaries Ste

tyre, arrange for the day ahead, fix
ing' appointments
Dressed, the president goes to the
executive office to begin the round
of conferences that cover the gamut
ef national and International prob
lems. Remaining at his desk for lunch
eon, Mr. Roosevelt sets aside this
hour for a talk with some man close
to the top problem of the day. Mon
day's luncheon U always reserved
for Secretary Morgenthau.

Afternoons vary, but the chief exe-
, cutlve usually gets In an hour or so
on the everlasting stack of mall that
piles up on the broad, flat desk.
More conferences and then the

rears to official subjects.
The Roosevelts like guests for din

ually are Intimate friends from
many walks of life.
Evenings vary. .Frequently he stops
for a movie on the second floor be
fore going to his desk In the man
sion for another attack upon the
mall or a conference.
Many a time the ship's clock on
the desk has clanged the eight bells
of midnight 'before lights were
switched off.

day school of the Jacksonville Pres
byterian church were so well received
that they are to be given again Bun

In the evening at 8 o'clock the
beautiful Christmas pageant, "The
Story of Christ's Birth." will be re
peated, and the cantata, "The Star
of the Bast," will be presented at
the regular morning worship serv
ice at 11 o'clock. "The Star of the
East," written by O. E. Pearls, has nn
excellent arrangement of words and
musle that makea It unusually pleas
ant to hear. Coupled with the able
direction of Alena Gilbert Nee and a
talented choir, this renders the serv
ice very Impressive.

HARVARD'S HERBARIUM
CAMBRIDGE, Moss. (UP) dray
herbarium of Harvard university now
has ft total of 865,310 specimens, one
of the greatest In the world.
Established In Civil War days when
Aaa Gray, pioneer American botanist,
gave his private collection of more
than 300,000 specimens to Harvard,
the herbarium last year received 30,
000 additional specimens.
