CALLED 10 REST
John Henry DeMn, recently of
Ruch. Oregon, where he has been
making his homo with his slater,
Mrs. Miles Can trail, passed away at
Sacred Heart hospital, Thursday
evening at 6:55 after a brief Illness,
from an acuta kidney abscess. Mr.
Devlin was born at Ashland, Oregon,
Feb. 17, 1871, of pioneer parents,
John and Annr Devlin.
Ha graduated from the Ashland
schools, and from the second class
of the Ashland Normal and business
college.
He taught school In the early days,
and clerked In the Jacksonville store
of Reames and White, also worked aa
reporter and business manager on
the Democrat Times. Later he travel
ed extensively through the Pacific
northwest In art picture work and
went Into real estate In Portland,
Oregon, and the Hood River valley.
He then became president of the
Imperial Sales company, art pictures
and paintings, with headquarters In
Portland. He was a member of Port
land lodge of Elks.
During recuperation after a major
operation over two years ago, Mr.
Devlin resided with his sister on the
Applegate, where he enjoyed a steady
improvement In health. In southern
Oregon sun, but the kidney abscess
which came about suddenly was
more than he could stand.
Previous to coming to southern
Oregon, Mr. Devlin had spent two
years with his sister, Agnes Z. Hlncs
of Forest creek, Ore.
He leaves to mourn his loss, two
sisters, Mrs. Maiy can trail of Ruch,
Oregon, wife of Miles Can trail, and
Mrs. Agnes E. Hlnes, of Forest Grove,
Ore., wife of Dr. Charles Hlnes. Onel
brother, Peter May, passed away in
Jacksonville at the age of 93, 39
years ago this month.
Funeral services will be oonducted
from the Sacred Heart Catholic
church in Medford, Monday morning,
Dec. S4, at 10 o'clock with Rev.
Father William J- Meagher and Rev.
Father Francis W. Black officiating.
All friends and acquaintances In
vited to attend the services. Inter
ment will take place In the Jack
sonville cemetery. Recitation of the
Rosary will be held at the Perl Fu
neral home Sunday evening at 7:30.

Plans are being completed by Earl
Foy, Medford post commander, for
the annual American Legion Christ
mas tree for children, to be held
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock In the
senior high school auditorium.
Besides the distribution of gifts
around a -Christmas tree to every
child under 10 years of age who at
tends and between 1500 and 2000
packages will be on hand there will
be a program of muslo and dance
numbers entertaining to grownups.
A male chorus will offer Christmas
music, Steve Whipple's Juvenile band
will play, and a 45-mlnute program
of dance numbers will be offered by
students of Evelyn and Ted Schrad
er's dancing school.
There will be no charge. A num.
bar from Oranta pass, besldea other
neighboring cities, are expected to
attend.
Commander Foy also announced
today that preparations are being
completed for the annual Legion
Christmas dance, to be given Qhrlst
mas night, Tuesday, at Oriental Oar
dens. A local popular dance band has
been secured and the Gardens are to
be decorated especially for the occasion.
300 ENJOY ELKS
Approximately 300 Elks and their
Invited guest attended the annual
Christmas tree celebration at the
temple last night, which was to
claimed today a financial, aa well as
social success.
Secretary Ernest Scott announced
that the usual amount of money
was raised for the purchase of toys,
groceries and other gifts to be dis
tributed In accordance with the nation-wide
plan of aiding the poor
during the Yule season.
Besides provisions which will be
purchased outright by the club,
many brothers and friends are mak
ing donations to be added to the
truckloada of gifts that will bo sent
out to hundreds of families In the
valley. The Elks also plan to follow
tha usual custom of giving many
families a Christmas dinner.
Distribution of the gift will be
handled by a crew under the super
vision of J. T. Davla of Davis' transfer.
