FOR U. S. FUNDS
BIO APPLEGATE. Dec. 17. (AP)
Realising the possibility of a vastly
Improved Irrigation system for the
Applegate valloy by means ot a large
reservoir at the Barr ranch below
Copper, which would supply water for
26.000 acres of land, farmers here are
formulating plans to secure federal
funds for the Irrigation project.
A committee consisting of B. K.
Taylor, ohalrman, T M. Rowden, and
Frank O. Preston, appointed this
week, will Investigate the method of
procedure to perfect an organization
assuming such an undertaking. The
committee was appointed by Miles
Can trail, who presided at an assem
bly of 35 farmers at Ruch Wednes
day, at which W. N. (Farmer Bill)
Carl served as secretary.
A dam 80 or 100 feet high In the
Big Applegate river would furnish a
normal supply of water during the
summer to Irrigate the 17,000 acres
In the valley already possessing water
rights, according to the opinion of
Lester Smith of the county engin
eer's office, who. was present at the
meeting Wednesday. Mr. Smith, who
has based his Ideas of the project on
a few calculations made at the pro
posed dam site, said that an addi
tional ten feet on the dam would
supply the approximate 10.000 acres
now unlrrt gated, which would be
reached by a high line ditch extend'
lng to Missouri Flat or beyond.
A 100 foot dam would back the
river to the Carbury bridge, a dis
tance of 8.7 miles, and would store
30,000 acre feet of water, an acre foot
covering one acre of land to a depth
of one foot, the engineer said.
Less than S3 00 .000 would build the
structure. It Is believed. The possl
blllty of a power plant, which would
generate 10.000 horsepower electricity,
also was pointed out.
The beneficial results of darning
the Applegate at the Barr ranch has
been considered by local residents
for 10 or 13 years and with the gov
ernment's readiness to finance such
projects at the present time, farmers
feel that their opportunity has ar
rived. With the river banks narrow
ing to a deep gorge at the proposed
site, the location Is not to be excelled
for storage purposes, and since the
Applegate runs a fair stream of water
even during dry seasons, It Is be
lieved that the proposed plan will
succeed.
Farmers of the valley are expected
to cooperate as a unit In launching
the plan, and the next meeting will
be held at thq Applegate hall Wed
nesday evening, Dec. 19. The com
mlttee will report their plans at that
time.
