!MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUTE. MEDFORD, OREGON1". FRIDAY, DECEMT5ER 14, 1934.
OF 11 LOVERS
(By Jeanesee Butler)
To the member of AJph chapter,
Medford Delphian club, musically In
terested Medford Is deeply Indebted
tor the Ilrat, perhaps the only, con
cert of the present holiday season,
given Thursday evening In the recital
hall of the Baldwin Piano Bhoppe on
West Main street, before an Intelli
gently appreciative audience.
"Musically Interested" is used un
reservedly In Itt truest sense, for cer
tainly Thursday's cnocert exemplified
true harmony, "beauty made audible,"
u a friend of the writer recently ex
pressed It. For this reason, too, all
privileged to attend the mualcale
must have entertained (gave evidence
of Jt, In fact) ft deeper sense of ap
preciation for real music Itself,
well as for those who expressed the
thoughts of the composer. Felix
Mendelssohn, so earnestly and, In
some Instances, reverently.
The Inspirations (to designate them

Fluhrer's is the only place in Southern Oregon or

usual sweets. The following will give you an idea
of some of which we will feature this year.

Baesler Lebkuchen
Aachener Printcn
Pflasterstcine

no Christmas tree Is complete.
We will also have our usual special values tomor
row for the thrifty shopper. Stop in at our store
there's lots of room to park.
P. S. Don't forget our New Sesame Bread, It's the
talk of the, town.
u "works' seems unsulatble) of
scarcely any other composer, could
have been more In keeping with the
Christmas season, expressing, aa they
do, the calmness, consolation and
confidence which ft knowledge of the
real Christmas should bring, but
which, alas, are seldom concomitant
of Its modern observance, long over-
commercialized.
In Mendelssohn's experience suf
fering and trials did not appear nec
essary In order to bring out masterly
arrangements of tone and phrase, ai
Mrs. Schuler stated in her introduce
tory remarks. Mendelssohn's music
expresses brightness, the beauty of
gladness, the conviction of what
might have been to him "ft weU tried
hope" in the "substance of things
unseen," a certain undeflnable but
definitely felt unworldllness, an ex
presslon of that quality of thought
which triumphs because It rises above
the current of the commonplace, the
"muck and mud of things," Into
rarlfled atmospheres. And because
one of the evening's numbers was
free from oratorio, "St. Paul," may
the writer be forgiven (If It needs
forgiveness), another analogy, related
to the Christmas season? Mrs. Schu
ler reminded those present that, while
Mendelssohn might perhaps never
raise his hearers to great emotional
heights, neither did he ever cause
them to descend to "balderdash"
emptiness, frustration, defeat. Might
this be because Mendelssohn under
stood and agreed with St. Paul that
"neither height nor depth" could
separate him and his genius from the
supreme Intelligence which was tho
fountalnhead of his Inspiration?
If the writer appears to be neglect
ing mention of performer and per.
formance, for the music itself, mem
bers of the Delphian club must real
ize that they perhaps attained their
object more nearly than they antici
pated, that parts were so harmoni
ously blended with the whole, that,
to the writer for one, the evening
brought out a bigger sense of music
than that sense wherein comparisons
concerning amount of study and ac
complishment, technical equipment,
Individual colorings, and the like, re
cede before a larger and more Im
portant mission.
It should not be overlooked, how
ever, that much of Medford's best
tulent was represented and happy dis
closures were made In relation to
some newcomers in Medford and the
valley. To say that the Baldwin re
cital ball was a fitting place for such
artistically outstanding event,
seems to be all that should be required.
The program. In Its entltrety, was
as follows:
(1) Flngal's Cave Overture
.. Mendelssohn
Harvey Amoss Moore and Marian
Moore
(2) Oh, Best In the Lord, from "Elijah"
Nancy Oole Mulholland, accompani
ed by Lltla Purucker
(3) Violin Concerto In E Minor
Mendelssohn
Helen Elta Drummond, accompanied
by Roberta Ward Bebb
(4) On Wings of Song, Mendelssohn
Roberta Ward Bebb, accompanied by
LUla Purucker
(5) Nocturne and Wedding March,
from "Midsummer wights
Dream" ....Mcndolssohn
LUla purucker
(0) Oh, God Have Mercy, from
the Oratorio, "St. Paul,"..-

Jas. Stevens, accompanied by
Roberta Ward Bebb
(7) Tlano Concerto In G Minor
........... Mendeisscnn
Antoinette Detcheva, first piano
Roberta Ward Bebb, second piano
(8) Etude Opus 10, No. 3 Chopin
Etude Opus 10, No. 13. Chopin
Antoinette Detcheva
As a fitting finale, a vested choir
of twelve young girls, directed by
Mrs. Bebb, sang ft group of Christ
mas carols. Very effective was their
entrance, as they marched In, each
carrying a lighted candle, and sing
ing "Adeste Pldelts." As ft recessional,
they sang, "Hark, the Herald Angels
Sing." which was written by Mendelssohn.
Included In the group were Lots
Herman, Kathleen DUlard, Betty
Fowler, Margaret Ruth Bolton, Doro
thy Qaddls, Edith Hodgklns, Doro
thy Burgess, Mary Kem, Constance
Moore, Barbara Holt, Luella Corn,
and Jeanne Salade.

SALE TO MINOR
Closing arguments were underway
this morning, before Justice of the
Peace William R. Coleman In the
case of W. T. Berry, operator of a
store In the Evans Creek district,
charged with "unlawful sale of liq
uor to a minor." Berry allegedly sold
beer to George Casad, a CCG enrolee
under 21 years of age. The complain
ant Is the Oregon State Liquor com
mission. The Berry store Is liberally
patronized by members of the near
by CCC camp, the evidence showed.
No decision Is likely in the case '
until a copy of the birth certificate '
of Casad Is received by court. Yes
terday afternoon was devoted to the
hearing of testimony.
Berry in defense, offered evidence
to show that casad, when asked his i
age had replied he was more than

31 years old and that upon this fcj
claim the beer was sold.
It was also claimed by the defense
that beer was sold at the CCC can
tonment. The state contended that
the CCC cantonment Is under federal
army regulations, which permits the !
sale of beer up to 3.2 per cent. It
was further held that Berry Is under
provisions of the Knox law of this
state, which prohibits sale to a
minor.
The state In Its closing arguments
cited a supreme court decision, which
held that

liquor, was no defense for the seller 1
however strong he might believe the
minor's claim.
The defense was represented by At
torney M. O. Wllklns, the state by
Deputy District Attorney George W.
