ASTORIANS CLAIM
PORTLAND, Deo. 13. (p) Port
land Interests which have frowned
on the proposal for an Interstate)
bridge across the Columbia river at
Astoria were accused of selfishness
Monday when a delegation from Clat
sop county requested that the Port
land chamber of commerce withdraw
Us opposition to the span. Portland
spokesmen replied that the bridge
would be "an economic monstrosity."
The chamber took no action on
the Astoria request for an about
face on the bridge question. The
matter will probably be up for con
sideration again Friday when the
Portland dock commission expresses
IU attitude. Bert E, Haney, chair
man of the Port of Portland com
mission, declared the bridge would
menace navigation and endanger na
tional security, but Merle Chessman,
spokesman for the Astoria group,
said ample clearance for all pur
poses would be provided.
