KYLE PUGH TRIAL
IN CIRCUIT COURT
Trial of Kylo Pugh, Indicted by the
lut grand Jury on charge of crim
inal syndicalism, woa underway In
circuit court today. Selection of a
Jury was started thut morning, fol
lowing the overruling of a defense
motion asftertlng that separate acts
were listed In the Indictment, and
demanding that tre state select the
one upon which they desired Pugh to
be tried.
. Pugh Is charged with "the poesea
slon, distribution, sale and public
dtaplay of literature" advocating
"force, violence, crime and revo'.u-
' tlon" to bring about "political
changes," Ptigh was arrested labt
September in the Paclfle highway
near Central Point, by state police,
He was traveling In a donkey-drawn
cart. Communistic literature and
pamphleU found In Pugh'a poases
slon are expected to be Introduced as
documentary evidence.
Since Pugh's incarceration In the
county Jail, the district attorney ana
circuit judge have received resolu
tions from "The Farmers' and Work
era' Union in this state, Washington
and Alanka, asking dismissal of the
Charge and release of Pugh.
Pugh la prosecuted under the 1033
Oregon law against criminal syndr-
'Callam. It la the first criminal syn
dicalism case in the history of Jack

"bonus mobilization" of that organiz
ation. Plans for the local recruiting cam
paign were announced by Commander
E. W. Wall, post No. 1833, V, P, W.,
at a meeting at the Armory.
In anticipation of the convening of
congress January a, when the bonus
Issue Is expected to be one of the
first major proposals of the session,
the national V. P. W. will launch the
most Intensive membership campaign
in Its history, according to Com
mander Wall,
'The Veterans of Foreign Wars of
the United States has led the fight
for Immediate payment of adjusted
service certificates for the past sev
eral years," Commander Wall said.
"We recently have been Joined in
these efforts by the American Legion
and we also ore winning Increasing
public and press support throughout
the country In behalf of the aischarr;
of this national debt to the World
war service men.
. "Victory for the bonus measure Is
actually In sight thla winter, Tne
only thing that can defeat us la the
lack of personal and active support
on the part of every veteran concern
ed. We know that every veteran In

Scenes reminiscent to the expulsion
of aliens from enemy countries dur
ing the world ar were enacted to
day as thousands of additional Hun
garians came over the border from
Yugoslavia.
NHchool Children Deported
Dozens or school children, still car
rying their textboods, said Yugoslav
police had taken them from class
rooms for immediate deportation
without their parents. Other chil
dren without guardians carried large
paper labels of Identification.
Women mothered children of oth
ers, having become separated from
their own.
The plaintive walls of children, suf
fering from the cold, mingled with
the sobs of men as the first thou-:
sand refugees spent last night on
beds of straw and leaves. A Hunga
rian tradition regards It as a weak
ness for a man to weep at a funeral,!
but these men cried unrestrainedly, I
over the loss of their homes. I
Many Hungarians apparently were!
not given time to get conveyances:
to carry their furniture beyond the I
fronlter. They were taken to the!
local railroad stations under guard
and bundled Into freight trains for
transportation over the border,

The Serb detachment of Yugoslav
soldiers entered Hungary only three
miles from here and challenged a
Hungarian border force to fight.
Only strong disciplinary action by
Hungarian officers, they reported,
prevented a battle.
The situation was tense and grave
fears were expressed by authorities
Szeged officials said they did not be
lieve an attack on the city waa con
templated but if It came the city was
prepared. Streets were crowded with
Hungarian soldiers.
(Szeged, with a population of 135,
000, Is Hungary's second largest city.
Budapest, the capital and the largest,
la only 96 mile away).
The invasion followed Yugoslavia's
expulsion of thousands of Hungarians,
who continued to come across the
border today. The situation arose
from the, assassination of King Alex
ander of Yugoslavia at Marseille Oc
tober fi.
Indignation High
Indignation was at a fever pitch
In Hungarian border villages, Serb
troops, wearing their emblem of a
skull and crossbones, shouted threats
and Imprecattona at Hungarians, au
thorities reported. - e
Szeged and nearby towns were fill
ed to overflowing with weary and
frightened refugees. Increasing the
fear was the knowledge that Yugo
slav forcea are far superior to Hun
garian troops along the frontier.
Many of the refugees were so 111
they required hospital treatment.
Four hundred were added last night
to the 1308 who had arrived yester
day and the preceding night. An
other refugee train was expected. The
emigres told atoriee of mistreatment I
at the hands of Yugoslavs. Some '
said they were forced to leave behind
much personal property.
Heavy guards of police were kept
last night about the schools where
the refugees alept.
