havo found It paid them well to turn
business men so that buuineaa men
might play at being cowboys and
westerners.
An Montana's dude ranchers re
turned Irom their recent annual con
vention at the Dude Ranchers' Asso
ciation at Cody, Wyo., they declared
that 1934 was the second best year
In the nine-year history of the or
ganization. 1929 Peak Year
Only 1929, the peak of the boom
era, surpassed this season. In that
year, 10.035 dudes registered at as
sociation ranches.
Dude ranching, of humble origin,
has become one of the west's largest
"big buslness?s." The total value of
land, buildings and equipment of the
association's members Is valued at
around $5.000,000 and that only In
cludes 65 ranches out of the more
than 300 scattered through the west.
Association members are for the
most part from Montana and Wyom
ing. They operate in better known
"dude" regions such as the Big Horn.
Cody, West, Yellowstone and Jackson
Hole countries. -

Dude ranching may be defined as
"the commercial exploitation of ranch
scenery and ranch activities, wanted
for the sake of recreation at pleas
ure." The Industry began In 1882 when
Bert Rumsey of Buffalo, N. Y., paid
a few dollars for board and room
following a vacation on the Eaton
Brothers' ranch at Medora, N. D. Ten
years later the Eatons began to cater
exclusively to dudes, pioneering the
Industry which now has more than
350 ranches, capable of handling from
10 to 100 guests.
CHICKEN SNAKES HAVE

grows dull for a couple of chicken
snakes In the state museum here
they amuse themselves by trying to
swallow each other.
Recently the smaller snake, some
thing over six tent long, managed to
swallow his cellmate s head, neck,
and shoulders snout two feet all
told. The victim finally hooked hts
tall in the wire walls of their cage,
and pulled himself out.
Motor vehicles operated by the vari

stock market encountered profit tak
ing currents today, but was general
ly able to hold Its own. Buying In
terest was extremely selective, how
ever, and most of the so-called lead
ers did little or nothing. Coppers,
alrcrafts, farm machinery and scat
tered specialties were the favorites
in active trading. The close was a lit
tle irregular. Transfers approximated
1,400,000 shares.

the pet dog of Mrs. John Campbell
was given a "human" burial here.
Mrs. Campbell, who was attached to

fore a meeting of the Medford Ameri
can Legion post end auxiliary at the
armory last night, when tentative
comml t teen were appoi nt ed for t he
Christmas benefit dance to be given
Jointly by the legion post and the
Medford Lions club. : The dance, to
raise funds for the Christmas activi
ties of both organisations, will be
held at Oriental Gardens, December
14.
Committees were also tentatively
appointed to cover the Legion "Christ
mas tree." to be held December 23
for all children of the community,
and the Medford presentation of "Ten
Nights in a Bar Room," to bo given
December 21.

land post told the Medford members
of the successful presentation of the
play recently at Ashland. When given
here it will be sponsored by the local
post and accompanied by local en
tertainment, but the talent for the
play Itself will be from Ashland.

this city, and manager of the Port
land division of United Airlines, was
present. Mr. Hall is a member of
the Medford post. Ted GeBauer, man-

Warden Halton Grant fired at a
sheep and shot himself In the
chest.
He hud been called to Albert Row
ell's farm to kill a sheep injured by
dogs. Ho placed his revolver against
the animal's head and fired. The
sheep merely blinked.
Orant felt something strike his
chest. Putting his hand Inside his
shirt, he found the bullet. It had
hit the sheep's head and bounced
back.
