The community dinner to be held
at Lake Creek Orange hall, Thanks
giving day, la expected to be an en
joyable affair. Many Orangers, neigh
bors and friends plan to gather there
with well-filled baaketa, to spend t le
day In feasting, visiting and various
entertainments.

Helmsch, despondent over being un
employed, shot himself through the
head In an attempt to commit sui
cide. He regained consciousness two
hours later, decided he wasn't ready
to die and walked two miles to city
hospital for treatment. He Is recov

1934 Show Assessment

SALEM. Nov. 37. (AP) The low
est point In the assessed valuation
of all property In Oregon In the past
15 years was reported by the eute
tax commission here today when it
set the assessed valuation for 10S4
at M43.504.4OS.
This figure Is a decrease of more
than $15,000,000 under that of last
year, or lower by one and one-half
per cent. The assessed valuation haa
receded each year for the past five
years from the 1030 peak of $1,135,
000,000, the commission reported.
Will Cut Mlllage Tax.
One direct effect of the decrease,
it was pointed out, will be further
reduction of the mlllage tax for
higher education of approximately
$31,000 and for elementary school
of $30,000.
The largest losses tn utility as
sessments were reported on steam
and electric railroads and telephone
companies. Steam railroads allowed
a loss of 24 per cent and telephone
compsnlea 3i per cent.
The loss In the valuation of the
Pacific Telephone & Telegrapn com
pany waa due chiefly to the recent
reduction In Its value for rate
making purposea by the public utlll
tlea commissioner. Tills was assessed
by the ux commission at about
$30,000,000. An Increase of 50 per
cent above the new rate base fixed
by the utilities commissioner from
which the company has appealed to
the courts. Future tax valuations of
thla firm are, to a ceruin extent,
tied up In the outcome of the ap
peal. Power Firms Unchanged.
Slight losses were registered by
the water and gaa companies, but
assessmenU of the power companies
were held at the same level aa the
local rolls, although showing de
creased earnings, the Ux experts
auted, FulL value assessment of all
utilities for the year was set at
$290,023,912.
Utility property, the commission
stated, which constituted 16.03 per
cent of the property roll In 193,
now constitutes 17.77 per cent, due
to Increases In utility valuations.
Real property assessmenU Increased
one and one. half per cent, while
personsl property aasessmenU de
clined about 30 per cent during the
same period.
Increases In locsl assessmenU were
msde In but seven of the 36 counties,
the largest being Malheur with US
per cent, Harney second with 1.61
and Coos third with 1.41 per cent.
Slight lncreasea were made In Doug
las, Jefferson, Lincoln and Wasco.
Many Show Decrease.
The largest decreases In the other
39 were In Wallowa county, which
waa 7. per cent lower, with the
others ranging down to .01 per cent
In Curry oounty. Tillamook was de
creased 4.81, and Columbia 4.72 for
second and third positions.
Other decreases In counties In
cluded Marlon 4.39, Lane 8.06, Baker
3.46, Klamath 1.08, Union 1.44, Jose
phine 1.38, Benton 1.30, Umatilla at
and Multnomah .24-, per cent.
The assessment of tillable land
decreased $3,600,000, or 39 cenU per
acre. Non-tillable lands decreased
$300,000. or five cents an acre.
City lou decreased $1,500,000. while
ImprovemenU on loU decreased $3.
