me. "There's no special hurry fcr a
minute or so: they ain't In court
yot."
"I'm ready," I said.
Picking up bis hat, Mr Cresswell
walked out of the cell. My Jailer
eyed me for a momen' with a tourb
of sympathy on his broad, stolid
face.
"Keep your nervs up," he said In
t low rolco, "and good luck to you."
I hadn't the remotest Idea who she was.
1 had been through so many erne-
lions during the past few weeks that
now, when the fateful moment had
come, my nerves and brain seemed
to bo too exhausted for any further
effort. All t felt as I stepped out Into
the dock was a kind of weary and
halt numbed resentment. I had no
particular sensation either ot hope
or fear.
1 walked forward to the front, and
the whispered hum ot conversation
that was going on all round me sud
denly became louder. From every
part of the court faces turned In my
direction. The occupants ot the
press seats began hastily scribbling
In their notebooks, looking up at me
with quick glances, as though
searching for appropriate adjec
tives. In the far corner the Jury were
already filing back Into their places.
They were beaded by the foreman
a lean, lantern-Jawed man wltb a
long scrsggy neck and a morose ex
pression. He looked like a dyspeptic
schoolmaster.
In a stontorlan voice the usher de
manded silence, Everyone rose to
their feet, a door at tbe back opened,
and Mr. Justice Carle In bis scarlet
rone stepped slowly Into view. He
was accompanied by two sheriffs,
and with leisurely dignity the trio
sottled themselves In their respec
tive seats,
"Mombors of the Jury, will you
please answer to your nsmes."

tively wandered up Into the public

Ing, but In the usual place, at tbe
extreme end of the front row,

caught sight of th- fsce that I was
looking for.
It was the face ot a girl. I bad no
ticed her first on the opening day
of my trial, and amongst that drab
crowd of typical sensation hunters
her fresh beauty had stood out like
some delicate flower. 8he was qulle
a stranger to me: I hadn't the re-

Somebody tapped my shoulder.
"It's all right, air," whispered
voice In my ear. "Come along with
me and got your coat and hat."

my brain began to clear. The

sion of people standing up, of a fresh

writing at his table. Then I turned
and walked towarda the steps.
Down below, In a half open door:
way facing the staircase, Mr. Cress
well was waiting for me.
"My dear boy," ha exclaimed, as
he seised hold of both my hands, "I
have no words to tell you bow happy
I ami I knew from the first ..."
"Better come Inside, sir. If yon
don't mind," Interrupted the warder.
He pushed back the door aa ha
spoke, and the next moment, still a
trifle dated, 1 found myself In th
small cheerless apartment whloh
served as tbe prisoners' dining-room.
"You can talk comfortabla In
hero," said the warder encouraging
ly. "Thanks," t said dully.
He took his departure, and aa th
latch clicked behind him I sank .
down on tbe nearest bench.
Mr. Cresswell patted me on th
shoulder. "W won't try to discuss
anything at present," h said,
"Whet you need la a good rest, a
good dinner and a nice long sleep.
The best thing you can do Is to com
