DESKS IN SENATE
SUED FOR NEW
Republican Side Stripped to
Make Shift to Right Side
Huey Long's Neighbor
Would Move Elsewhere
By HERBERT PLt'MMER .
Associated Press Staff Writer
WASHINGTON The most convinc
ing visible evidence of the democrat
ic sweep In the elections of November
fl to be found In Washington la the
United States Benate chamber.
Col. Ed Halsey, secretary of the
senate, and Chesloy Jurney, ser-fteant-at-armB,
have been amusing
themselves In their spare time since
the elections In shifting senatorial
desks from the left (republican side
of the chamber to the right (demo
cratic) side.
The result is striking when one
glances down from the vantage point
of. the press gallery and sees Just to
what extent the republican side of
the dividing political aisle has been
stripped.
One whole row of desks formerly
occupied by 'republicans had to be
shifted over to make room for new-ly-elocted
democrats. To fill up the
gaping space, the remaining 27 desks
left have been scattered liberally
around.
A 'Cherokee Strip
Republican senators . of the 74th
congress will have no cause to com
plain of being crowded. A square
dance, almost, could be executed In
the yawning space between their
desks.
Halsey and Jurney admit the pres
ent set-up may be only temporary.
It may be necessary after the senate
Is convened to form a "Cherokee
strip" on the republican side to take
care of the democratic overflow. It
was necessary once before to do this
to provide seats for republicans.
Back In 1907 nine republicans took
up their abode on the democratic
aldp.
Huey Long may force a 'Cherokee
strip" all by himself. The Louisiana
"kingtish" has a habit of roaming
all over the chamber while making
a speech. After Huey has tread on a
few senatorial toes on the crowded
democratic side there'll probably be
a howl for more space. Already Sen
ator Byrd of Virginia, who sits im
mediately behind Long, has served
notice that either he or Huey must
move In the next congress. j
Byrd threatens to sit on the repub-;
llcan side unless Vice President Gar- I
ner gives him another seat.
A Difficult Assignment !
Probably the toughest assignment
of them all on the senate side of the
capitol in the next congress will be
that of young Leslie Blffle, secretary
to the majority.
It's Biffle's Job to keep track of all
the democratic senators. He must
know where they are" at all times or
else see that they are paired for im
portant votes. He Is responsible to
Senator Robinson, the majority lead
er, for the whereabouts of all demo
cratic senators.
With 69 on his hands In the next
congress, Biffle Is In for a hard time.
Often In the past it has been a ques
tion of how fast Blffle's heels flew
around the capitol, whether the dem
ocrats won or lost on a roll call. He'll
be forced to move faster than ever
from now on. ...

CHARLESTON. W. Vs., Nov. 23. (.1
A score of southern West Virginia
communities, threatened and In some
cases isolated by raging forest fires,
welcomed scattered rainstorms today.
Two thousand men all available
fire fighters struggled to halt the
s-eep o the flames toward the set
tlements. One fire fighter, Henry
Frith, 19, was crushed to death by
a blazing tree which fell on Zlcn
mountain.
The largest of the communities
threatened was Beckley, a city of 13.
000, situated on a mountain top 70
miles from Charleston. After the
flames destroyed telegraphic com
munications to Beckley yesterday, ar
rangements were started for radio
broadcasts to the Isolated city. The
wire services were restored, however,
before broadcasts became necessary.
With high winds whipping the
flames over miles of forest land, th?
fire fighters were encouraged by pre
dictions of continued rains through
out most of West Virginia today.
State forest wardens estimated the
total number of fires at 250. in boi'.i
northern and southern sections of trte
state.

PLENTY OF TURKEYS
PORTLAND, Nov. 22 !?) An ade
quate supply of turkeys for the Po:t-
land holiday trade was indicated la
a survey of the market today. The
Indication was that producers are ex
tremely eaer to market their birds
with as little delay as possible.
Up to this time the average quality
has been the best known for the pre
ThanLiglvlng movement. A definite
preference for hens Is shown by price.
They generally command a premium
of one cent a pound over toms of
large size.
Live birds today were from 14 to IT
cents a pound. For dressed stock tha
top price to retailers was 17 to 2'i
cents.
