UNEXPECTED INTRUDER
"TVHAT are you trying to tell
' meV" asked Marian ot the Dis
trict Attorney. "Why should you
worry whether l'ye got the house
locked tlghtT"
"I don't know of any special dan
ger," he answered with a laugh. "1
only want to pacify this young hus
band of youra. Now listen, child
pack your bag and be ready for me.
I'm coming right out to bring you
back to town."
"Lon Is hurt, Isn't he? Don't lie to
me please, I won't faint or do any
thing foolish."
"No, Lon Isn't hurt. I'll tell you
what's wrong, because if 1 don't
some of your newspaper friends
will. Lon Is in jail. Now don't get
panicky, it's the safest place be can
be at a moment like this."
"On the check charge!" she
aaked.
"No, he was caught robbing Mc
Swaln'a safe. In the Clark building."
"Lon . , . robbing?". Marian ex
claimed incredulously.
"And don't worry about that
either," came the laughing reply.

She felt confldent that the District
Attorney was withholding some

Swain's pending arrest.
"But, Ian," Bowen was protesting,
"give me a lead, don't leave me "
Marian was looking at Hero. He
was at the front door growling. That
meant atrange footsteps. The Dis
trict Attorney bad evidently made
good time.
"I'll see you In town and explain,"
she said hurriedly, "the D. A.'s at
the door now."
Sbe hung up and raced to the
door, drew the chain bolt and swung
the door wide, then stepped back
Into the room. Silver Hondon stood
there, followed her In and closed the
door behind her.
"Grab that dog," she ordered.
Marian made a lunge to hook her
hand Into Hero's harneBS. He was
pulling forward, teeth bared.
"Get him out of my way before I
kill him."
"I've come ts bargain with you," Silver declared.
"Hun along now. Don't bother about
unlocking the gate. I'll walk up to
the bouse."
Marian turned from the telephone
and hurried to the bedroom. It
should take her friend about half an
hour to drive out from town. Lon In
jail. Curious that she should feel re
lieved. The Idea of her Lon's rob
bing a safe was preposterous. How
had McSwaln managed to frame
him In a position like that?
At least tha blow bad fallen. Now
they could act. There would be no
mora ot this suspense, so more of
that agonized waiting for something
to happen.
Hero watched her bring out ber
bag and fold clothes Into It. She
didn't know whlcb clothes she
packed. He marched to the closet
Mid returned with his leash.
"All right, old man," she said pat
ting l.im, "you are going too; going
for a rids In the automobile," she
explained.
HE pranced about Joyously, fol
lowing her, getting under ber
feet as she went from room to room
' seeing that everything was In order,
turning off the refrigerator, seeing
that she had turned the electricity
off In the warming oven; returning
to make sure she hadn't made a
mistake.
The telephone again. She hurried
back. It was Bowen, her old manag
ing editor.
"Say, Ian," he began, "what's this
wild yarn they're phoning over
from beadquartera, something about
your husband being locked up for
robbery? Is the fellow they have
over there really your husband?"
"1 Imagine he la, the D. A. ust
telephoned and broke the news to
me."
"You don't sound the least bit
downhearted," Bowen commented.
"I'm not," she confessed, "I've
been expecting so much worse to
happen that this sounds like a re
prieve." "You mean you . , . you expected
him to do this? Marian, what's It all
about?"
"The biggest story you've had In
a long time," she prophesied. "It's
the story we were working for the

All dentist of the southern Oregon
district will attend an all-day meet
ing In Medford, Friday, November 33
The meeting Is one of a series be
ing conducted by the Oregon State
Dental association, as part of an ex
tensive program to send leaders in
the various branches of dentistry into
all sections of the state, giving Io:al
dentists an opportunity of benefit V
them. The Medfqrd meeting will be
sponsored by the Southern Oregon
District Dental association, of which
Dr. R. O. VanValzah of Medford is
president.
Doctors D. D. Fisher, R. P. LeRoy,
Walter H, Davis and J. H. Rossman of
Por 1 1 and. wl 1 1 spea k and conduct
clinics before the dentists. Dr. Ross
man will also speak: at a meeting of
dentists and physicians, Friday fit
7:30 p. m-. to be held at the Hotel
Medford.
Dr. Fisher Is recognized as an out
standing man in the manipulation of
porcelain In dental restoration, Dr
LeRoy as an expert in the use of
silver as a filling material, while Dr
DavU Is an Instructor In denture con
struction (artificial teeth) at trw
North Pacific College of Dentistry.
Dr. Rossman represents the dentul
profession on the state board of health
and 1m also a member of the staff of
the department of dental medicine at
the out-patient clinic of the Uni
versity of Oregon medical school. He
has had wide experience dealing with
mouth Infection in relation to gen
eral health.
Every dentist, whether a member
of the local dental society or not. In
the district la Invited to attend and
practically all dental offices will be
found closed that day.
Portland's Birth
Rate Shows Gain
PORTLAND, NOV. 23. () This
city's birth rate la showing a auo
stantlal gain. In October, 344 babies
were born, 60 more than In the cor
responding month a year ago. The
birth rate for the month was 13.1 to
each 1000 of population, compared
with 11.3 last year.
There were 305 more babies bom
In the first 10 months of 1934 than
in the corresponding period of last
year. ,

Complete official election reurns to
the Associated Press election bureau
today showed Senator Bronson Cut
ting, Republican, having a lead of
1201 votes over Congressman Dennis
Chavez, Democrat, for the six-year
senate sent from New Mexico.
The final vote was, cutting 76,245,
Chavez 74,954.

Charles H, Martin, spent $12,509 In
the recent fi?ht for election as gov
ernor, Frank A. Spencer, treasurer of
the committee, reported to the secre

Horace E. Walter, Democrat, for sec
retary of state, spent (900 in his cam
paign, while the Coos county Demo
cratic central committee spent (414
in support of that party's candidates.
The association to preserve Oregon's
credit spent (1,724 In opposition to the
Orange power bill. The league to de
feat the 20-mlll tax amendment spent
(1,819 in its campaign. The commit
tee on public policy of the Oregon
State Medical society spent (1,069 In
opposition to the healing art amend
ment, and Paul B. Firth spent (319
opposing the same amendment,
Sam H. Brown reported, expendi
ture of (205 for radio addresses in the
."Interest of clean government," and
for other advertising. The State Fed
eration of Labor spent (78 to defeat
C. C. Chapman for representative from
Multnomah county.
