PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 19. AP
A woman and her child lay dead to
day and an automobile driver was
held in the county Jail on a man
slaughter charge aa Portland's traffic
accident fatalities continued to
mount at an alarming rate.
The man under arrest was William
B. Stout, 30, a nurse at the federal
transient bureau in Vancouver. Wash.
Stout was charged today with In
voluntary manslaughter and his ball
was set at ?10.000.
Police said his automobile plowed
Into a group of three persons at a
street Interaction last night. They
said Stout had been drinking.
The dead: Mrs. Richard O. Burk
hardt, 35; her daughter. Ebon, nine
years old. A sister of Mrs. Burkhardt
was injured.
Accident Investigators declared that
Stout did not atop after the crash,
but continued on at high speed, only
to ram another car head-on. The
driver of this car and Stout were
badly cut and bruised.
Mrs. Burkhardt and her daughter
died this morning. The dcatha Bent
the city's fatal accident' toll for the
police year to 79.
Mr. Richberg took hl sharpest
pen In hand and wrote to the federal
trade commission. He said. In effect,
he thought the commission should
desist, that the steel people would
use the case to worm out of Its NRA
code and implied that the federal
trade commission was going outside
Its field. He admitted that ho had
no Jurisdiction over the federal trade
commission, because It la an inde
pendent commission. Also he added
a sentence suggesting that no talk
ing be done about the matter.
Of course, there has been no talk
ing, except by a few hundred people,
and then only In stage whispers,
which will be heard around the

to stand pat on ita demands, which

before Mr. Richberg started. That

suspended, when defendants agreed
to depart from this state.

The offer was that Enrlght resign
from the Southern Oregon Bar asso
ciation, and It was suggested that he
move to Idaho, where he has a license
to practice law. Enr'ght asked until
January 1 to comply. The request
was denied.
A Justice of the peace court convic
tion, for drunken driving, also stands
against Enrlght, and the sentence of
the higher court was the minimum
for a second violation. The jail sen
tence waa suspended ln the Justice
court conviction.
At the expiration of the eight days
stay of execution, unless the offer has
been accepted, an order of commit
ment to the county jail will be Issued
the district attorney said.
