Roosevelt Proclamation
Marks Thanksgiving Day
WASHINGTON, Nov. 16. (AP) In,
a Thanksgiving day proclamation, 1
President Roosevelt today called upon
the American people to "dedicate
ourselves anew to work for the bet
terment of mankind."
This should be done, he said, "with
gratitude In our hearts for what has
already been achieved."
The text of the proclamation fol
lows: "I, Franklin D, Roosevelt, president
of the United States of America, here
by designate Thursday, the 20th day
of November, 1034, as a day of thanks.
giving for the people of the nation.
'Thus to set aside In the autumn
of each year a day on which to give
thanks to Almighty God for the bless
ings of life Is a wise and reverent
custom, long cherished by our people.
It Is fitting that we have been given
courage and fortitude to meet the
problems which have confronted us
In our national life. Our sense of
social Justice has deepened. We have
been given vision to make new pro
visions for human welfare and happi
ness, and In a spirit of mutual hap
piness we have co-operated to trans
late vision Into reality.
"More greatly have we dedicated
our hearts and minds to things spir
itual. We can truly say, 'What prof
lteth a nation If It gain the wholo
world and lose its own soul.
"With gratitude In our hearts for
what has already been achloved, mi'
we, with the help of Ood, dedicate
ourselves anew to work for the bet

WASHINGTON, NOT. 16 (AP)
Msny democrats elected to th, new
congress hope President Roosevelt
will "write his own bill" on the
soldiers' bonus to avert a break be
tween the White House and capitoi
Hill at the coming session.
Since the American Legion went
on record for Immediate cash pay
ment of the adjusted service certlli
cates that will mature In 11 year,.
It Is conceded among returning
member, that a vote will be forced
on the Issue In both branches.
Some administration followers wno
ran on a "support Roosevelt plat
form are saying that should the
bonus pass and be vetoed, they and
the president would be "put on the
spot" In the 1938 elections.
Compromise Hoped
They are suggesting an effort to
net the president to advocate
compromise" bill which they could
support and which the chlefexecu
tlve could sign without depertlng
from his position that relief for the
needy Is the first task.
This, they assert, might go far
to satisfy the demand lor cash pay
ment and at the same time pre
vent the outright and Immediate
appropriation of about 2.000.000,
000 declared necessary to pay off the
bonus under other proposala.
Though these members did not
outline the term, of a possible com
promise, some suggestions have been
mede recently. The other day Chair
man Buchanan (D. Texas) of the
House Appropriations committee ex
pressed favor for cash payment of
the bonus to veterana on relief rolls.
He estimated thla would cost one
fourth or one-third of $2,000,000,000
Some Change Views'
Some members recalled today that
despite word from the president last
spring that he would vsto a cash
bonus bill, the house passed In 296
to 125. Later It died In the senate.
A large number who opposed It at
the time, they said, did ao because
the Legion then had not approved
the measure.
One member, who does not want
to have hla name printed, said:
"I believe the bonus will pass both
houses over a veto. The veterans aro
demanding It. If the president, real
izing thla probability, would write
his own bill, then the new deal
congress would not have to leave
him. Otherwise, I am afraid It will.1
