Defensive Play Against

SAW FRANCISCO. Nov. Jl. (Bpi.
Correspondence) The Stanford.
Washington football game WW very
disappointing. Those who chose the
Oregon-O. 8. C. game In preference
were imart. Judging by newspaper
report Oregon "big game" was
real contest. The tussle at Palo Alto
on Saturday was no contest, It was
an exhibition and not a very gooa
one.
Aside from tSe extraordinary ground
gaining abilities of Bobby Orayson,
who made a couple of touchdowns
practically alngle handed, there were
no thrllla In thli struggle for the
conference title and Rose Bowl
honors. The plain truth Is Washing
ton was simply outclassed. Prom the
opening whistle to the final pistol
pop, there wasn't the slightest doubt
of the outcome, the only question
waa how large a score the Cards
could run up. Thanks to this boy
Orayson. and the uncanny accuracy
with which the Husky backs shot
forward passea Into his arms, the
final score was 24 to 0. Had Wash
ington been content to kick and hold
down the score, the total might well
have been 3-0. For that drop kick
In the first quarter was, In a sense,
the Cards' only EARNED scoro. Ellm.
mating fumbles and Intercepted
passes. Stanford showed no consist
ent ground gaining offensive Inside
the 80-yard line. The Cards' offensive
would flash for a while, but quickly
slow down. Eliminate Orayson and
we would certainly not rate this
year's Stanford team the equal ol
former coast chsmplons. as far as
the offensive Is concerned certainly
not the equal of Ernie Nevers tesm.

and still can't bring him down, there
is no alibi there is nothing but
sense of complete frustration, and
a desire to kick oneself all around

Another remarkable thing about
Orayson is his capacity for taking It

FIRST TEN TEAMS
FOR GRID SEASON
By ALAS GOULD
Associated Press Sports Editor
NEW YORK, Nov. M. (AP( A
flock of college football arguments
remain to be settled but there's Just
one really ringing response today to
the question: "What team tops the
current ranking list?"
It's the University of Minnesota's
Juggernaut, by as smashing a mar
gin as most of the victories hung up
by the galloping Oophers In their
all-conquering csmpslgn. ,
Here's the nation's ''first ten"
among the college gridiron aggrega
tions based on a poll by the Asso
ciated Press among leading observers
throughout the country and showing
the team records:
I Minnesota (won six),
3 Alabama (won seven).
3 Stanford (won seven, tied one).
4 Pittsburgh (won six, lost one).
A Princeton (won six).
8 Colgate (won four, lost one).
7 Illinois (won six).
8 Navy (won seven).
Ohio State (won five, lost one).
10 Syracuse (won six).
With one split ballot for the top
position, Minnesota gained 31 14 votes
for first place In a total of 41 re
ceived so far from scattered but rep
resentative sections. Alabam's crim
son tide, which looks Ukt a favorite
for the rose bowl assignment lnaa
much aa the Oophers probably won't
be allowed to consider an invitation,
polled 6 14 votes for first place. Stan
ford received 3 and Pittsburgh I.

Ths recent southern Oregon-Dortn-thern
Callornla golf tournament held
at Rogue Valley course has again
been brought to the attention of the
entire country's golf enthusiasts with
the appearance of a picture of Anna

at New York Ctty.
The photograph shows a smiling
close-up of Mlsa Fuson, who recap

prominent Oregon golfers haJ been
eliminated In a tournament which
saw 133 men and women contestant
tee off In the qualifying rounds. The
event waj the largest of lu kind to
be held in Medford, and has added
much to the reputation of the Rogue
Valley links, designed by the famous
Chan Eg an.
Under the photograph U the fol

But on the defense thst Is an
other matter! Judging by this con
test slone, this "footbsli expert"
would put down the cards as the
greatest defensive team ever turned
out at Palo Alto. or anywhere else
for that matter. Washington has a
heavy, fast, well-coached team, and
yet It literally couldn't make an inch
on straight football. That Stanford
line Is simply Impregnable. And It
Isn't the line alone. Never have we
seen such a secondary defense such
a bunch of hsrd tackling, alert and
resourceful backs. Bob Maentz, Med
ford's representative on the 8tanfo:1
team, was particularly noticeable In
this respect. He played a fine game
In other respects, too his blocking
for Grayson and Hamilton was a big
factor In the yardage these backs
gained In atra'ght rushing. But when
Bob hit a man that man stayed
down. It was the ssme with the
other Csrd backs. If, between now
and New Years, the Stanford offense
can be brought up to Its defense,
not only will the West win the Rose
Bowl game hands down, but the
103 Stanford team will go down In
history as the greatest football team
ever seen on the coast. However, that
is quite ao "if."
Is football enthusiasm declining
on the coast? If this contest for the
conference title can be taken aa an
example, the answer Is "yes." There
must have been 25.000 or 30.000
empty seats. There was practically
no enthusiasm outside of the two
cheering sections and not much
there.
Now we note they are advertising
seats for the "Big Game," whereas a
few-yeara ago, unless ono were an
alumnus or a millionaire, getting
Into the "Big Oame" waa practically
Impossible. Yes, everything that goes
up has to come down. Perhaps in
five or ten years undergraduates at
Palo Alto and Berkeley will be as
blase toward football as undergradu
ates at Cambridge and New Hnven.
Apparently such things move with
the sun. But wo hope not.
