"PechaTfoy"
Now at Craterian
Opening yesterday at the Craterian
theater, "Peck's Bad Boy." starring
Jackie Cooper, was greeted by an en
thusiastic audience, which paid U
the tribute of galea of laughter, as
well as a few furtive tears. It Is a
great human document.
There is an abundance of stellar
talent In the new film at least
three stars, and some will agree there
are tlx. Jackie Cooper and Jackie
Searl appear respectively as Bill Peck
and Horace Clay, offering perform
ances which are splendidly matched
and balanced. Then there Is Thomas
Melghan, whose return to the screen
must be a cause of rejoicing to all
those who admire his stalwart,
healthy humor and his matured and
certain touch.
Also, there Is O. P. Hcggle as the
town's handy-man. philosopher, tramp
and humorist a "fat" role. The other
two stars are Inevitable in a boy's
story. They are dogs. Bill has one
and Horace has the other and they
get along Just as badly as do their
young masters. Each dog is the dumb
symbol of his owner. Much humor
Is developed In this dual antagonism,
for Bill haa reason to detest his
mealy-mouthed, hypocritical cousin
Just aa "Elmer" haa to hate "Wee
Toy," Horace's pedigreed Pekinese.
The story Is that of a misunder
stood boy, who though full of mis
chief and lively spirits, Is at heart
a fine, manly youngster who wins
everybody's liking on sight. Played by
Jackie Cooper, he Is an unfailing delight.
Lemon Drop Kid
Damon Runyon. author of the suc
cessful hits, "Lady for a Day" and
"Little Miss Mnrker." has written a
new story, "The Lemon Drop Kid,"
which, in picture fcrm. comes to
morrow to the Rial to theater, with
Lee Tracy and Helen Mack heading
the cast.
Damon Runyon has built his suc
cess on his ability to create color
ful characters who csn usually be
depended upon to do things In a
slightly different way.
In 'The Lemon Drop Kid" his cen
tral character, played by Lee Tracy.
is a race-track enthusiast, who gets
in trouble when he Induces a mil
lionaire to bet on the wrong horse.
In his efforts to make a get-away,
the "Kid" hides out In a email town
where there are no horses to distract
hla mind. But Just when the "Kid"
decides that he cannot stand the
quiet one minute longer he discovers
that a perfectly grand girl has fallen
in love with him.
