of President Roosevelt.
The collapse of the Republican
party In New York city was In sharp
contract to Tammany Hall, boister
ously hitting the come-back trail
from Its disastrous defeat or last No
vember at the hands of the fu;!?n
party In the municipal election.
In New York city, Tammany took
revenge for Its beating of last year
bv electing Prank J. Taylor city comp
troller over Joseph D. McOoldrlck,
fusion Incumbent, by the margin of
13,855 votes.
Taylor's eloction constituted' a se
vere strain upon Mayor liaOuardia'i
city administration, and with Tam
many now controlling five and pos
albly seven of the 18 votes of the
important board of estimate, the fu
alon working majority faced an un
certain future. Governor lehman's
defeat of Robert Moses, the Repub
lican candidate, was swift and stag
gering. The majority for the presi
dent's close friend and successor at
Albany approached the 850.000 mark
as final return filtered In.
The governor's final plurality will
far exceed that of 700.000 given Mr.
Roosevelt In the IPSO gubernatorial
elections, and will closely approxi
mate the governor's lead of 847,439
when he was selected Unit two years
ago.
United States Senator Royal S.
Copeland won handily for his third
term with a plurality of about 780,
000, all from New York city.
