at the Lions weekly luncheon yes
terday, talking in opposition to the
20-mtl! tax limitation amendment.

tary school tax, and tend to ham
per revenue for the maintenance of
higher education and government
functions. "The job would be a Job
half lone," Mr. Bowman said.
The counties will be hardest hit
by the tax, according to Mr. Bow
man, who also said tml provide

destructive to gain ita end.

CRATERIAN DRAMA
DELIGHTS CROWDS
Charlie Ruggles On Rialto Screen
A new star blaas across the
screen of the Crsierian theater in;
on of the year's most ausplslou
entertainments the pieturixatisn si
Alexander Dumas Count of Monte
Cristo."
Robert Donat, whose only film
appearance in America was in "Pri
vate Life of Henry VIII" starring
Charles Laughteis. proves definitely
his right to be considered en ot
the newcomers to be reckoned with.
Dashing, handsome and with a keen
sense of the dramatic Donat will
certainly be seen in many forth
coming production.
The atory itself ia an old sss
but still a favorit after a century.
The picturlzation of it U as new
and modern as today. Accentuating
that quality and preserving all th
elements that have mads the Dumas
novel great, the picture tells th
whole story in complete, wholly
interesting manner.
Produced on a massive scale, it
la the story of Edmond Dantes, th
Count of Monte Cristo, his inhuman
conviction to 20 years in a dungeon
and his ultimate revenge.
As an innocent victim of political
intrigue, Danes U cast into the dun
geon of Chateau Dlf, and then
forgotten. Time cesses for hira until
another prisoner. Abbe Faria, tun
neling his way to freedom, cesses
to Dsntes cell. For years th two
work together to escape. Tha abbe
educates Dantes and tells him of
the fabulous treasure on the Island
of Monte Cristo. As freedom U just
ahead, the Abbe dies an Dantes,
sewing himself into his dead friend's
sack, is cast into the sea. Picked
up by roving smugglers, he event
ually reaches Monte Cristo, finds the
treasure and the m?tld la rtis with
a way open to avenge himself upon
the three who caused his tragedy.
With wealth, power end prestige, the
first of the three Is forced Into
suicide. Then the second is driven
mad. But the greatest revenge comes
in a stirring court scene in ??hich
the third, the cruel de Viilefon,
Is exposed and raised.
portrayed out iKmat, in bis rose
of Dantes, completely overshadows
the other members of the cast with
his powerful portrayal of the simple
sea captain who becomes the Count
of Monte Cristo.
It is a great story, and will un
doubtedly live for a leng time in
the memory of those who see it in
its picture version. Robert Donat
brings to the screen a vital new
personality one destined to go far.
Others in the cast include such
well known characters players as
O. P. Heggie, Louis Calhera, Sidney
Blackmer, Luia Aiberni, Irene Hervey,
besides many others whose faces
sre familiar to all show-goers.
