T ON had parked the car on the

that held a small white rangers' sta
tion on Its flat top. Eight thousand
feet, and yet other mountains tow
ered above them.
Marian looked up at them. She
had been waiting for days for Just
such a question from Lon, and now
she found herself hesitating.
"It Isn't a question of being what
you call poor, Lon," she began, "It's
women like Silver. Too say she
would be a luxury. But don't men
appreciate luxuries more than ne
cessities?" "Some men might, Ian, I don't
believe I would. I want the things

They parked on the banks of the
Sacramento River, for no particular
reason, parked there several times
on the dykes to look down on the
foam of blossoms In the orchards,
and they stopped on the Antloch
bridge to look at the dusky purple
of Mount Diablo In the distance.
EVENTUALLY, however, they
reached home and Marian went
to her apartment to find Anne Just
awakening from her day's sleep.
"My word," she said, atlfllng a
yam, "did you find a gold mine lo

will be no separate classes for In
struction In the various fields of
medicine. All lectures will be deliv
ered before the entire Assembly, the
speakers appearing only by Invita
tion. This new type of medi, meeting,
developed In the Middle West during
the last 30 years, permits general
practitioners and specialists alike to
Klean the latest Information on de
velopments In surgery and medicine.
From 8 a. m. until 10 p. m. mem
bers of the association have hardly
had a free moment except for meals
In addition to lectures, there are nu
merous diagnostic clinics arranged
especially to meet the needs of gen
eral practitioners.
The "floating medical faculty," as
it la termed by Dr. Geo. W. Crlle of
Cleveland, chairman of the program
committee. Is composed of teacheis
from the outstanding medical schools
In the United b.aes, Canada and
Europe.
Speakers for this year's meeting
have not yet been announced, but
Dr. Crlle said that, as In the past,
the sole basis for choice would be
their ability to Instruct the practic
ing physician.
Occasionally certain men are se
lected because of their special work
In subjects which appeal to practi
tioners, he added, since the meetings
are attended mainly by younger men
who have yet to make & name for
themselves.
The program will Include lectures
on developments In certain fields of
endocrinology, radiology, serums, vac
cines, surgery, medicine, obstetrics,
diseases of men. women and children,
and diseases of the eye, ear, nose and
throat.

time work and a monthly payroll of

INVENTOR KILLED IN
HOMEMADE AIRPLANE

A home-made airplane on Us first
flight crashed today and killed the
inventor-pilot. Edward Sorrel!, 32,
manager of the Acacia club at Hol
llster, Mo.
The plane was equipped with wings
of Sorrell's own design which he had
hoped would enable the ship to take
off and land at slow speeds.

The big dog. who had been leap

car when Lon whistled, gazed at

Marian settled Into a chair and
began to read, thought of Hondon,

Marian turned hack to the paper.
