Coach Darwin K. Burgher's visit to
Eureka Saturday with his Medford
high school grid team drew the fol
lowing published comment from
Charles Erb, Jr., former Idaho univer
sity coach, now a resident of the sea
port city:
When the Medford high ecnooi
football squad puts up at the Vance
hotel this afternoon there will bo
with them, Darwin Burgher, former
University of Idaho football star who
Is now coaching the Medford gridiron
players.
Burgher was one of the greatest
ends that the Vandal team had dur
ing the years of 1926-27-28 and con
sidered one of the finest football
players of all time. Besides being
an exceptional man on both offense
and defense, he did the Kicking for
his team as well as being the panning
threat.
He captained the Idaho 1037 Pacific
coast Intercollegiate championship
team, which tied with the University
of Southern California for cos at hon-
ora. .TI waa a pupil of mine at Idaho
during these years and, If I may say.
Darwin was a source of pride to me
both scholasttcally and athletically
for he won the Charlie Erb, Jr.,
scholarship trophy, given to the high
est scholar in the "Big I society" for
all types of athletics. !
Burgher was picked by the players
of U. fl. C. the national champion
In 1028 as the best end on their all
opponent eleven. Considering that
the Trojans had on their schedule
that season, Notre Dame, and Pitts
burgh, besides their regular games In
the coast conference, made It a con
siderable honor.
Without a doubt. Burgher was the
greatest athlete I ever coached and X
feel because he was always a. great
scholar that his team which plays
Eureka high school Saturday night at
Albee atadlum will demonstrate the
caliber of man that thta young coach
possesses.
It has been my privilege to be very
Intimate with Coach Jay Wlllard of
Eureka high school during my so
journ locally. Further I may add
that I have never seen two men, re
ferring to Wlllard and Burgher, that
are so similar in mannerisms and
character. My observance of Coach
Wlllard and the manner in which he
handloa his boys and the character
building which he Instills In each
Individual Is Indeed somethng that
every member of this community
should be proud of, particularly the
mothers and fathers of students at
tending Eureka high school.
IS NEW TYPE FOR
E
Bringing with htm a new spirit,
if not a new type of wrestling, one
of the most Interesting of the col
orful matmen who have Invaded the
United. States from foreign climes
Bonny Mulr of Australia, the wrest
ler who met defest at the armory
Thursday night at the hands of Pete
Belcastro, but who Is asking for an
other chance.
Mulr, a towering, curly-headed lad
In his early twenties, who carrlea
with him a pleasant British air and
talks In a decided accent of playing
cricket and other English sports in
his home city, Melbourne, is making
his second visit to the states. With
the exception of two years spent here
on his first invasion, from 1D30 un
til 1032, and the few months spent
so far on his second visit, since Jan
uary of this year, he has lived the
rest of his life In Australia.
But Bonny did not come to Amer
ica to crash into professional wrest
ling here as one of the "terrible"
foreigners who are the main attrac
tions on so many wrestling cards.
re had never taken up the mat game
seriously In his homeland, and
started In this country as a meek
and Inexperienced wrestler. In his
first several bouts Mulr was kicked
from post to post and given thor
ough trounclngs by his rougher and
more experienced American rivals.
He slowly became accustomed to the
harder, more punishing American
type - of wrestling, however, and
learned to take care of himself by
handing out some "dlrf of his own.
although he was never an unortho
dox grappler at heart.
Mulr has the fresh clean appear
ance of the perfectly trained ath
lete, smiles at the roughing up he
received last week, and says with
confidence that he believes he can
beat Belcastro easily If given an
other try.
Mulr attended school In Mel
bourne, taking some university work
and becoming Interested In ath
letics at an early age. It was after
he was employed as treasurer of a
large theatrical firm In Melbourne
that he first began to think of pro
fessional wrestling. Forced to aban
don his work because of the de
pression, Mulr txirned to several pro
fessionals, among whom was Ed
(Strangler) Lewis, for advice, hav
ing become acquainted with wrest
lers In occaslonnl workouts. It was
on their advice that he decided to
give the game a try.
Mulr has never wrestled to a great
extent In Australia, due mainly to
Injuries he received in a match In
New Zealand, on the return trip
from his first visit to America. On
this occasion he received a broken
breast bone, and has taken his share
of the knocks In the gsme, having
also had his ankle broken, and a se
vere scalp wound. He contradicts the
opinion of some that wrestling is not
a rough game.
Among his most well-remembered
experiences la a match with Ous
Sonnenberg in Boston, as semi-final
material on a card featuring Don
George and Henri DeGlane for the
heavyweight championship. Mulr
lost the encounter, but has the sat
isfaction of appearing before 40,000
people on an eight-match program.
Mulr played cricket, one of the
world's roughest games, he sayi, for
the South Melbourne Cricket club,
nnrt also enjoyed swimming among
his favorite Australian sports.
Wrestling In his native country is
not as rough as it Is here, Mulr
ways, and is promoted in 10-mlnute
I,OS ANGELES. Dissatisfaction
over the defense his University of
California at Los Angeles team put
up against California players yester
day caused Coach Bill Spuulding t..
