ter, Mary Lou. are spending a week's
vacation In Lodl and San Fmnclsca,
Cal.. having left the flrst-ot the week,
and are expected to return this eve
ning. Mr. Ouenther Is a member of
the postofflce force.

Undergoes Operation Mrs. Leon
Jones of Spring street underwent a
major operation Saturday at the Com
munity hospital.
In Medford Mrs. T. S. Gannett of
Portland. Is in Medford. and will be
here on Monday and Tuesday attend
ing to business matters.
Mrs. Fulton Home Mrs. W. E. Ful
ton of Eagle Point, who has been a
patient at the Community hospital,
was able to return to her home Friday
evening.
Furnishes Bond Ed. 1. White of
this city was out on $10 bond yester
day, having been arrested by city po
lice Thursday night and confined Fri
day in the ctty Jail, on charges of
drunkenness.
Nelson nere David C. Nelson, of
the processing tax division, bureau of
internal revenue. Is in Medford for a
week on official business, having ar
rived the middle of last week from his
headquarters in Pendleton.
Malln to Return First Lieutenant
Howard A. Malln, of the CCC dlstrtct
headquarters, Is expected to return
to Medford the first of ,thla week
'from a two weeks' inspection trip
throughout the district.

ceived alight bruises when the motor
bicycle ha was riding was upset by
a truck whose driver did not stop.
The accident occurred at 10 a. m .

Receives Burns Charles Edwards,
forest service employe, received burns
which are confining him to the Com
munity hospital when the tractor he
was cleaning, an the Dead Indian
road early Friday morning, caught
fire. Edwards was reported at doing
satisfactorily at the hospital last
night. The blaze was started when
a spark was made from friction cause J
from gasoline running through' a
hose. The fire burned through pipe
connections, destroying 00 gallons of
gasoline, and spreading to Edwards'
clothing.

PIONEER PUZZLE
F. D. Swingle, southern Oregon
pioneer, who visiting In Medford Fri
day, cleared up a cryptic statement
credited to him at the last meeting
of the Southern Oregon Pioneer as
sociation. Mr. Swingle, at the reun
ion, said that he had lived In three
counties In southern Oregon without
moving his residence. His explanation
of this assertion, as given Friday waa:
"I was born April 32. 1858. in a
house which stood near the present
Von der Hellen home In Antelope. In
1870 moved to Upper Lost River,
which was then a part of Jackson
county. Later the place where I re
sided was taken from Jackson 'coun
ty and placed in Lake county. Later
still. It was placed In Klamath coun
ty. Thus I can say that I have lived
in three counties and yet not moved
my residence."
Mr. Swingle moved to Ashland about
thirty years ago where he has since
continued to make his home.
The Polynesian, first newspaper of

More than 1,000 school children will
be Inoculated against scarlet fever,
with their parents' consent, in Phila
delphia, the city school board has
announced.
Production of both gold and silver

Opening with a great rally In the
armory on November second, the Com
munity chest drive for Medford Is
expected to get underway on No
vember 7, 8 and 0. In order to raise
funds locally for organizations here.
It was pointed out last night by
those In charge of the drive, that tt
Is necessary for Medford to reach Its
Community cheat quota, In order to
receive federal funds tor relief this
year.
Organizations to receive aid are the
Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy
Scouts, Health association, Olrl
Scouts. 'Girls Community club an-1
the Welfare exchange.
Committees for the drive are, exec
utive group: George T. Prey, chairman,
Eugene Thorndike. Larry Schade. J
C. Mann, J. C. Thompson and A. J.
Hauk. Herb Grey is chairman of the
publicity committee, assisted by Leo
Bishop. Moore Hamilton, C. L. Mac
Donald and A. O. Soderberg.
Dr. R. E. Lee, president of the Toast
masters' club Is In charge of public
speaking, and Eugene Thorndike and
J. C. Thompson are to take care of
outside pledges. J. C. Mann and C. M.
Kldd constitute te special contact
committee, while Lary Schade, W. 8
Bolger and C. D. Bean are In change
of firms and employes.
M. N. Hogan la general for the drive,
and Beth Bull Is la to be In charge ol
all exhibits. Frank Hull will act as
manager.
Captains and lieutenants have not
been reported as yet.

DEATH MRS. HALE
SHADY COVE. Oct. IS. ((Special). -This
community was saddened by the
recent death of Mrs. A. A. Hale. Sho
had been 111 for long time and hid
been a patient sufferer. She was a
loving mother, a kind friend and
neighbor, beloved by all who knew
her. Many from here gathered at the
graveside to pay their last respects
and extend sympathy to the bereaved
family.
The following poem was composed
by Mrs. John Laden In memory of
Mrs. Hale:
Our life la what we make it.
Whether weal or woe.
Tot ve scatter clouds or sunshine.
Everywhere we go.
PAYS CITY VISIT
Ahead of its schedule, the "Cas
cade Express," Hudson Terra plane
ruggednesa car, arrived tn Medford
at 4:30 p. m. Saturday and after
parading through the business sec
tion left for Walla Walla. Wash.,
where they will report at 3:30 this
afternoon. The car will return to
Medford next Thursday at 0:30 p. ni.
