MIAMI, Fla. (UP) Seventy - five
thousand World war veterans will In
augurate Miami's "Winter Season"
three weeks early this year with the
American Legion national convention.
Miami, resembling a great ghost
city in the summer and early fall,
will become a winter playground with
the opening of the convention Oct.
33-3S.
Annual "winter cleaning," In pre
paration for the tourist season, will
begin early In October. Apartments
and dwellings, their windows boarded
up since spring, will be opened a
month earlier to accommodate the
thousands of visiting legionnaires.
The legion convention will open
Oct. 31, with religious services In the
great amphitheater In Bayfront park.
The convention proper will open
the following day In Bayfront park.
Simultaneously, the Legion auxili
ary will convene at the Mlami-Bllt
more hotel In Coral Gables.
The commander's dinner has been
scheduled for the evening of Oct. 23
at the Blltmore Country club.
The "Porty'n Eight," which devotes
Its activities to the less serious side
of life, will parade with torchlights
during the same night, closing with
the grand ball later.
During the two days preceding the
convention, the parade of long pas
senger trains down the seaboard from
Atlanta will resemble New York's ele
vated railway. The Seaboard Air
Lines and Florida East Coast railroad
will maintain a 30-minutes-between-t
rains schedule. Five hundred addi
tional Pullmans will be pressed Into
service.
Coastal steamship lines have char
tered extra liners for the veterans.

The finding of a skull In the moun

the mystery of the disappearance of
Manford Alexander, 40, of Cove In
December, 1931.
County Coroner George Walker and

of the find yesterday by young Halsey

GARTERLESS FAD
LONDON (UP) Britain's menfolk
are discarding their garters.
Instead, they are trusting to "self-
supporters," clastic bands, safety
pins, sticking plaster, or Just defying
gravity to solve the problem of keep
ing up their socks.
What Is more, they have called
forth a great wall from haberdashers.
Their news organ. Men's Wear, has
some strong things to say on this
subject.
"Some wholesalers and retailers are
encouraging men to go garterless.
The next logical step would be for
shoe manufacturers to produce men's
shoes with a type of lining that
would make the wearing of socks un
necessary. That would tend to de
stroy the hosiery business.
"Next, some enterprising manufac
turer might produce a sandal that
could replace the modern shoe."
The whole reason for all this bit
terness seems to be that some hosiers
aro selling socks which don't need
any keeping up. In fact, socks that
keep themselves up.
