of the bone, In the opinion of Dr.
I John T. O'Brien, head of Seaside
sanitarium, were 05 youngsters rap-

light and diet, and much suffering

Children are admitted to the sani
tarium, their limbs terribly twisted
and bent, their bodies wasting. Thty
leave straight and bronzed, radiating
health.
Seaside sanitarium la one of two
Institutions of Us kind In the United
States. Only Connecticut children
suffering from tuberculosis of the
body, other than the lungs, may ob
tain treatment. The moat modern
equipment Is used.
Children attend school 11 months
In -the year. August Is the one ex
ception. The school room, In mild
weather, la under huge elm tree In
the spacious grounds. The pupils
wear only trunks and do their study
ing in the open air.
The sanitarium resembled a huge
seashore resort. Overlooking Lon
Island Sound, It has facilities fcr
bathing and all outdoor sports. Win
ter and summer alike, children are
dressed the same, In shorts. Their
bodies become Immune to the cold
and glow after a brisk play period In
tbe snow,
The sanitarium was built to ac
commodate 170 children. Those con
fined to frames on the porches find
amusement in the terra cotta figure
of white cats, dogs and fancy birds,
suspended from the ells of the roof.

DROUGHT TIED QUAIL
BETHANY, Mo. (UP) The drought
has made the quail more or less do
mestic In this section of Missouri,
farmers report. Usually the most
shy of birds, the qusll have been
coming Into barnyards to get food
and water.
One farmer said a flock comes to
his chicken yard, and another said 38
birds fly to a windmill trough every
time he appears In the barnyard and
wait for water.
Sportsmen say It will be necessary
to scatter feed early this fall If the
birds are to live.
TRIPLE CALLA LILY IS
GROWN BY CALIFORNIAN
HAYWARD, Cal. (UP) The Dlonne
family Isn't the only one that's dou
bling, tripling or quadrupling this
year.
Mrs, Hulda Stukaloff of Tennyson
exhibited a "triple cal la lily" that
grew In her flower bed here re
cently. The lily. Instead of having
the usual single white spathe (petal)
had three petals clustered around a
single yellow spadix.

KEARNEY. Neb. ( UP ) Pocket ra
dios, made entirely by hand during
candlelight hours, have been put on
the market here by Paul Beshore, In
ventor, producer and distributor.
Not yet 20, Bwhore suited his In
venting career at an early age, build,
lng his first radio at 10. He has con
tinued with his Inventive genius un
til now he has brought it to tlw
stage where It Is yielding profits.
For the past six months every mem
ber of his family has been kept busy
making the pocket radios, trying to
keep up with the orders which conw
rolling In every day.
The tiny radio consists of a box.
four by two Inches and about oct
Inch deep, with a dial on the face
of It, a single earphone and two other
cords, one an aerial and the other
the ground. The invention Is a com
plete success. Beshore even has en
gaged the medium of national ad
vertising In magazines, and has re
ceived many orders from all parts of
the United States.
When the orders come In too fast,
the boya In the family find It neces
sary to stay up all night working on
the radios.
"I came downstairs one morning,"
Paul'a mother said, "to find the boys f
still working and with 32 radios com
pleted and boxed ready for mailing."
Paul Is a graduate of Kearney high
school and hopes t:..t profits reaped
from the sale of the radios will' pro
vide the necessary finances for a
course in electrical engineering In
college.
