Detroit Tigers have won the American I
league pennant, but whether their
world series rival would be the New
York Giants or the St. Louis Car
dinals none could eay today.
The Idle Tigers "backed" Into the
flag yesterday when the New Yorlc
Yankees were shut out fi0 by John
Merena, a Boston Redsox rookie right
hander, and thue lost their laet math
eroatlcl chance of overhauling De
troit In the ra to the wire.
While Mickey Cochrane's Inspired
club thus waa sewing up Its cham
pionship, developments in the Na
tional league served to indicate that
If the world champion Olante are to
win again they'll have to do so on
their own behalf. They'll get scant
help from the Cardinals.
While the Giants were Idle, the
Cards beat down the Chicago Cubs.
3-1, and headed for home only two
games out of first place. With the
season ending Sunday, the Olanta
have four games yet to play two
with the Phillies today and tomor
row and two with Brooklyn Satur
day and Sunday. The Cardinals still
have six on their slate, two with
Pittsburgh today and tomorrow, and
four with Cincinnati on the last four
days of the season, also all at home.
If the Giant win all four of thtr
games, they will take the pennant,
no matter what St. Louis accom
plishes, if they win three while the
Cards capture six, the race will end
in a tie and a special series of three
games will be necessary to decide the
league champion. Any combination
of New York victories and St. Louis
defeats which adds to four will auto
matically give the Giants the flag.

summer cottage here. Dr. Charles O.
Abbot, of th Smithsonian Institution,
Is proving himself a handy man about
the house.
Th stove 1 rather complicated, but
the hot water heater la simple. H

He discussed improvements whereby
he expects to obtain mid-day tem
perature of approximately 400 degree
fahrenhelt. At 5 o'clock on a fairly
cool afternoon the stove thermometer
showed 345 degrees.

Upon the glass covered top of a trough
shaped "furnace" sunlight falls. An
ordinary clock keeps the face of th
furnace turned toward the sun
throughout th day. Due to the cur
vature of the trough, light Is brought
to a focus along copper tube, willed
extend lengthwise through the fur- '
nace.

Leaving from 800 to 400 degreea of
heat in the oven, the cooled air gravl

charged again, and thus a lazy cir
culation of about 60 gallon Is auto
matlcally maintained. Barring leak
age, the oil last Indefinitely.

ing of sllo-cel, a chalky formation
found at Lompoc. Calif. It Is almost
