Thousands of idle men put to wori

circulationmore comfortable, more
beautiful and more valuable homes
for Americans a higher morale and
a better standard of living- These are
among things which the Federal
Housing Administration hopes to ac
complish through the Modernization
Plan. It is a plan designed to stlmu
late more than 500 related Industries
that have remained Inactive while
practically all other trades, industries
and businesses are on their wey to
recovery.
Rates Are Reasonable
The Better Housing Program, the
nrst step of the Federal Housing Ad
ministration to be offered to the pub-
lie, enables owners of homes and
other buildings to have needed repairs
and desired alterations and improve
hienta made on an attractive loan
basis. The loans are obtainable from
local financial Institutions authorized
by the government to advance the
money; and no security la necessary
exoept good faith and proof that the I
borrower's Income can take care of
subsequent payments. Property own- j
era have the advantage of reasonable
rates of credit without any extreme
and recurring renewal fees. Thin re
payment plan Is one of the easiest
ever evolved for this type of loan.
The centering of this plan around
building trades Is expected to bring
this vastly Important group of In
dustries out of the doldrums in which
It has languished for the past five
years or more. It has been estimated
that there are around 16,500.000
buildings In the United States need
ing repairs; that there Is a shortage
of from 750,000 to 1,500,000 homes;
and that there are 6,000,000 homes in
this country that lack the common
and essential convenience of a bath
room. This condition is due to an
appalling recession of building during
recent years.
Effects Far-Keachng
As the building Industries recov
er, more carpenters, plumbers, paint
ers and other tradesmen must go to
work to take care of the new activity.
More men must go to work to help
manufacture the building materials
that will be In demand for Improve'
ment projects. More men must go to
work on the railroads, to help ship
the supplies. And subsequently, more
men must go to work in other trades.

Measuring for Glass
In measuring the glazing area of
a window for new gIa.-, it la best
to take the measurements from the
outside. The dimensions must Include
not only the size of the actual open
ing to be glazed, but also the little
ledges against which the glaae will
rest. A rigid measuring rule or a stel
tape la more preferable to a string, as
the latter may stretch.
