MEDFOID MAIL TRTBUXE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1934.
PAGE SEVEN
MEET .TOMORROW
Th first meeting of the Jackson
county budget oommlttee, composed
of State Senator George W. Dunn of
Ashland, W. J. Freed man of Central
Point and A. C. Hubbard of this city,
and the members of the county court,
la scheduled tomorrow for the pur
pose of organizing, electing a chair
man and discussing preliminary de
tails. Another meeting will be held
next week and at regular Intervals
until November 1, when the budget,
under the law, must be completed.
Relief, roads and old age pension
funds are scheduled to be the main
problems confronting the committee.
To meet the requirements of the old
age pension, the county court will
be required to appropriate between
(20,000 and 925,000. It is expected
that the coming session of the legis
lature will enact measures providing
state funds and relieving the coun
ties of some of the financial strain.
The original law made no provision
for providing funds. This left many
Oregon counties with a mandate to
pay the old age pensions but with
no money to pay them. The average
old age pension In this county Is be
tween $11 and 912. There are about
200 old age pensioners.
Size of the relief appropriations
depends upon Improvement of labor
conditions and federal and state do
nations. For five years the road sof Jackson
county have received only the barest
maintenance, but the traffic has net
diminished, and the routes are be
ginning to show the effects of wear
and tear, bringing complaints alike
from autolsts and residents of rural
districts. Members of the county
court hold that unless repairs are
made "the county will lose Its In
vestment," and that money can be
saved In the long run by Improve
ments before the roads are a total
loss. Repairs on bridges and culverts
are also needed. Most of the rural
roads have become "wash boarded."
The road fund was badly crippled
when the administration cut off the
Oregon-California road fund money
It amounted to about 972,000 for last
year. Western Oregon counties, bene
ficiaries of the fund, are now making
an effort to secure Its return, with
back payments.
The general financial affairs of
Jackson county are now in good
shape, and there is no chaos. The
present county court, for more than
a year, "has been sitting on the fin
ancial lid," and restricted all ex
penditures to necessities. Most ol
the county office budgets submitted
to date run the same as last year
There are some Items calling for the
raising of salaries, but these are
largely offset by reductions. What
Increases sought are modest.
County officials predict that the
compiling of the 1934 budget will
not be the nerve-wracking affairs of
recent years.
A public hearing on the budget, In
accordance with the law, will be
called for early in November.
