with Hauptmann and District Attor
ney Foley at the Bronx courthouse.
When he left he hed failed to make

During the time he was with Haupt
mann, "Jafsle" had a chance to hear
his voice and to listen for the pe
culiarities of speech which he noted In
his Interviews with the rsnsom re.

not bean satisfied that It was we

Identification Poor.
It is understood, too, that yester-
ay when "Jafsle" was called upon to
look over a lineup of several men in

the "John" to whom the ransom was
paid, h picked out Hauptmann and
two other men who were detectives.
These men, he said, "looked like"
the "John" of the cemetery tryst.

Garage Mystery Snot.
The garage In which the ransom
money was found was something of a
mystery to neighbors of th Haupt
mann. They said the Hauptmann
car was seldom In the garage, and
that two men spent a great deal of
time In the place.
One of the places where Haupt
mann was a frequent customer was
Hans' Bavarian beer garden, where
Hauptmann was wont to linger over
his beer and a game of pinochle.
Speaking today of Hauptmann.
Hans Helnzmann. proprietor of the
garden, said:
"Ach, I am so surprised. He was
very nice man."
The actual lead to Hauptmann's
arrest was given toy Johnny Lyons
and Walter Lyle, gas station attend
ants. The Hauptmann sedan drove
up several days ago and Hauptmann
asked for "five gallons of ethyl." To
pay the 98-cent bill, Haupmann dug
a gold certificate from his pocket.
Lyle. who took the money, com
mented on the scarcity of gold notes.
Yes," Hauptmann replied. I vo
onty got sbout a hundred of them
left myself."
Stalling for time (for the eight of
the gold not tn Itself was a sus
picious circumstance), Lyle sought to
engage the man In conversation.
Hauptmann, however, asked curtly for
his change.
Got License Number.
As he drove away, Lyle scribbled the
sedan's llcens plat number across
the face of the bill.
With the recovery of the a.13,750 In
the Hauptmann garage, there still Is
approximately til .000 of the ransom
payment unaccounted for. Further
search of the Hauptmann premises Is
under wsy today.
The home of the Hauptmsnns la
st 1279 East 22Jnd street, a sparsely
settled part of the Bronx. The house
Is four miles from the entrance to
Woolawn cemetery. wSere "Jafsle"
held a preliminary conference with
the ransom seeker. "Jafsle's" home Is
about an equsl distance from the
cemetery.
St. Raymonds' cemetery, where the
ransom wss finally paid. Is about six
mile from where the Hauptmsnns
live.
Throughout the never - ceasing
search for the man. who had got the
Lindbergh cash, the authorities have
felt that the oventual solution would
lead them back to the Bronx, prom
time to time gold certificates made
their appearance, but always the or
