OR LIFE
"DECAtJSE," aha laid, "I think
that you feel the way that yon
do because you are a young man
and I am a woman, and we have
been thrown together."
"Isn't there another aide to thatt'
he auggeited. "You are a young wo
man, and I am a man. and we have
been thrown together."
Her unexpected anawer moved
him Uke sudden trumpeta.
"It there had been a million men,"
lie said, "1 would like you best"
"That makes me teel pretty
damned humble," said Bowers. He
rose on the Impulse, telt and stum
bled his way around the capstan and
sat down on the edge ot her mat
tress. "I don't hear very well," he
said, and bis voice shook a little In
spite ot blm. "What was It you said
lust now?"
"I said that It I had been thrown
with a million men and you were
one ot them, I would have liked you
best"
It waa very dark In the triangle
of tbe bows, but that night the stars
were Inordinately brlgbt and it
seemed to him that she waa a visi
ble glamor. Hie handa which trem
' bled found ber shoulders.
"We will be married." he said,
"the minute we get to Singapore,
but Singapore la a long way from
here."
"I know," ahe said.
"I don't know what I believe. But
It there Is a Ood He Is everywhere
and If I said here and now that you
were my wife and that I'd give you a
square deal until death came along
and made a mess of things and If
you said that I was your husband
and you'd do the same by me. He'd
be oar witness."
She mads no reply. As a rule a
woman'a silence means one of two
things. It either meana yes or It
means no. It Is a kind ot speech of
whlcb every man must be his own
Interpreter.
The next morning when Bowers
and Flint met for exercise with the
Improvised medicine ball Bowers
displayed a Juvenile and Irrational
(ayety. To the least rattectlve it
must bave been evident that here
was a man who delighted In being
alive and he flung the medicine ball
with unnecessary force and fervor.
Flint could hardly stBOd against
the Impact and bis looks darkened.
Jealousy springs more quickly to
conclusions than any other force in
nature
At breakfast Flint perceived what
another might not bave noticed. It
was no more than a subtle change
In Mowers' attitude to Ivy and hers
to him. It was casual aa always, but
the casualness seemed forced. There
was an undercurrent of tenderness
and Flint had the desolated feeling
that tbey had reached an under
standing, but be could not be sure
and be felt that he bad to be sure
because the torment ot uncertainty
was so great
ALU through the morning and
early arternoon Flint watched
for an opportunity to be alone with
Ivy. Tbo opportunity did not pre
sent Itself until the work ot caring
for the menagerie was over for the
day.
At luncheon there bad been an ar
gument between Wong Bo and Bow
ers aa to the way In which a certain
hand should fcsv 'teen played tbe
night before. They ad agreed to
meet at four o'clock la Captain
Wong Bo a quarters and thrash the
matter out scientifically.
Ivy reclined In one ot the lounge
chairs, her eyes half closed, but
after Flint came along and aettled
himself In the other chair, they
opened, and she noticed that his
expression was still dark and glow,
erlng.
It had been dark and glowering all
day. Knowing perfectly well tbe
state of his feelings toward herself.
Ivy at once telt sorry for blm and at
the aame time hoped that he would
continue to leave those feelings un
expressed. "1 don't often get a chance to
apeak with you alone." said Flint
He was not reclining In his chair but

"I keep plenty busy," said Ivy,
"and I ought to be dressmaking at
this minute." She had not liked the
tone ot the voice In whlcb be bad re
marked that he did not often get a
chance to talk with her alone. "And
It you don't mind," abe continued.
"I'll run down and get my work."
"Can't 1 get It for you?"
She was already on her feet, shak
ing ber bead and smiling. He accom
panied her to the head of the narrow
stair by wblcfa the passenger cabins
were reached. Flint watched her
until she had turned Into the pas
sageway at tbe foot of the stair and
waa lost to view.
For a few seconds he stood as one
who Is undecided. A wave of ugly
emotion swept him. His brows gath
ered into a knot and be went reso
lutely but softly down tbe stair.
The door ot the cabin In which
she changed and kept her things was
alar. Tbe dress wblcb she waa mak
ing was folded into a towel. On tbe
top ot thla neat package rested a
neat little sewing-basket ot Malay
weave.
As he came opposite the door a
plank In the ancient decking
creaked and she faced quickly
about A woman less experienced In
the ways of men than Ivy might
bave been terror-stricken at tbe ex
pression ot his face and the husky
broken quality ot bis voice.
"You got to listen to me," he said.
"Willingly," said Ivy In her most
natural and untroubled tones. "But
It Is much too stuffy down here."
SHE) picked up the halt-made dresa,
wrapped In the towel, and the
work-basket But Flint bad come
forward until he almost filled the
narrow doorway. He bad one toot Id
the cabin.
There la no use tclklng on deck,'
said Flint "It la too public."
"Haven't I anything to say about
that?" she asked.
He made no answer, but went on
with what ha had come to say:
Listen," he said: "I've got money
coming to me. Plenty of It 1 know
how you're fixed. You're up against
It But what's mine Is yours. That's
what 1 wanted you to know."
"That's awfully kind ot you," said
Ivy In an even voice. "But you're
mistaken about me. 1 have a good
Job waiting for me In Singapore.
Thanks for tbe offer Just the same."
"Yon don't understand," aald
Flint thickly. "1 want to marry you.
I guess you know I've been rrasy
about you ever since you stepped
your little foot on tbls ship."
"I am aorry," said Ivy.
"You mean 1 don't stand any show
with you. You don't give a damn
about me."
"1 do give a damn about you,"
said Ivy, "and I have liked you very
much. Please don't do anything to
epoll that."
Man's Jealousy teems with Intui
tions. "What makea you think you got a
Job waiting for you?" he said. "Who
promised It? You didn't bave one
promised when we left Slnbao. You
haven't received any radiograms.
and either you bave made It up In
your bead, or you're trusting to
someone who hasn't tbe reputation
for keeping promises."
Tbls kind of talk Isn't doing any
good," said Ivy. "It won't get you
anywhere."
Asking for what you want never
does get -a man anywhere," aald
Flint "A man's got to take It"
He atepped suddenly all the way
Into the cabin and pulled the doot
shut behind him. Ivy was horribly
annoyed, but not frightened. She
was not afraid of tigers. She saw no
reason to be afraid of a young man
who was wiry rather than strong,
and whose emotions bad momenta
rily unseated his reason.
1 wouldn't touch me It I were
you, she said. "1 bave a good pair
of lungs and If you don't open that
door and gat out ot here. I'll put up a
yell for help that wtll Da heard clear
back In Slnbao. Be yourself. Look
at your face In that mirror: you look
aa If you were going to have a
stroke. Does apoplexy run In your
family?"
She had put down her sewing and
faced him, her eyea narrow and cold
with contempt and her flats
clenched. She bad noted the exact
position In Its rsck of the besvy
glass drinking water bottle, and abe
had ao maneuvered that Ita narrow

right band. She was strong and
