with news of a kidnap threat against
three of President Roosevelt's grand
children, a fourth grandchild slep In
his crib here unguarded.
He Is the president's second grand
eon, William Donner Roosevelt, 31-months-old
son of the first marriage
of Elliott Roosevelt.
His name was not mentioned In the
kidnap "plot" against his half-sister.

daughter by his second marriage:

not worried here. My baby Is safe

ernor, will attend the Josephine
county fair at Oranta Pans next Sat
urday, The announcement says:

HIT BY LAWYERS
MILWAUKEE, Aug. SI. p) The
American Bar association, nearlng the
end of Its 67th annual convention, to
day took a parting shot at the Roose
velt new deal by accepting the report
of a special committee which criti
cized the securities act of 1033 as rid
ing "rough shod over legal principles."
The report recommended the act be
revised "with the aid of corporation
dlrectora and executives, bankers and
lawyera familiar with the practical
problems" of finance. The revision
was urged In the Interest of "simpli
fication and clarification," and con-,
templated 14 amendments, some of
which have already been passed by
congress.

BURNS TO DEATH
ALBANY, Ore., Aug. 81. (AP)
Samuel W. Oalnes, 01, Linn county
pioneer of 1883. burned to death In
a fire that destroyed his home near
Crabtree, east of Sclb, early today.
Hie stepson, Jack Orlffln, was se
verely burned about the head and
hands In an attempt to reacue the
aged man. Mrs. Belle Archer, a step
daughter who also was Bleeping In
the house, escnped Injury. Cause of
the fire was undetermined.
The historic Oalnes home, which
was a total loss, was built In I860
and originally housed Linn county's
first postofrice. Pour children sur
vive Oalnes who will be burled In
the Provldenoe cemetery near his
home 8unday.

A coroner's Jury returned a verdict
of accidental death this morning at
Conger's Funeral Parlors in an In
quest Into the deatb of Oeorge Lacy
Oarrett, Sams Valley farmer, who was
killed Thursday afternoon while
cleaning a rifle.
Coroner Frank Perl gave as cause
of death a bullet through the left
chest and hemorrhage, witnesses at
the Inquest, conducted by Attorney
Oeorge Codding and Coroner Perl,
were Dr. W. O. Bishop, who examined
the body when called to the scene of
the tragedy: Mrs. Bessie Oarrett, wife
of the deceased, and Ellis and Olen
Oarrett, who reside with the Garretts
the Sams Valley farm, but wbo
we not relatives, officers stated.
Jurists who turned In the verdict
were E. H. Sleight. Leslie Van Doren,
I. T. Bebb, Earl Beall, Harold F. Lar
son and F. E. Blgalow.
Lieut. A. a. Dunn of the atate po
lice, Phil Stansbury of the sheriff's
office, Codding and Perl were called
to the scene Thursday at 2:30 p. m.
by Mrs. Oarrett, who had haerd the
shot and rushed to the back porch to
find the body. The deceased lived
for 30 minutes after the shot was
fired, state police stated, but did not
spesk.
State police said that Oarrett and
Olen Oarrett had finished the noon
mesl dishes and had gone to sit on
the back porch. Later Olen Oarrett
left for the barn. Oeorge Oarrett
went Into the house, got his gun, a
15-20 Wluchester carbine, took It to
the porch and atarted to clean It.
Mrs. Oarrett was Inside taking a nap.
and Ellis Oarrett was writing a letter
when the gun apparently went off
accidentally.
Oeorge Lacy Oarrett was born at
Corvallts, Februry 37, 1887.
He had formerly resided near La
Orande, Ore., but upon retiring came
to Medford about 10 years ago and
for the last 10 months bad resided
In Sams Valley.
Besides his wife he leaves two
brothers and one slater E. H. and
R. W. Oarrett and Mrs. 8. A. Tuttle
all of Elgin, Ore.
The remains will be forwarder- this
evening to La Orande and burial will
be at Summervllle cemetery. Mrs
Oarrett will accompany the body.

The full measure of Upton Sinclair's
smashing victory for the Democratic
nomination for governoi of Califor
nia, which left party lines wavering,
became apparent today In nearly
complete returns from Tuesday's pri
mary election.
Sinclair, who left Pasadena shortly
after midnight for a "courtesy call"
on President Roosevelt at Hyde Park,
swamped his eight opponents In the
Democratic race and polled some 77,
000 more votes than the Republican
nominee, Acting Oovernor Frank F.
Merrlam, the returns showed.

Accurate

package of cereal labeled "Bran
state on the label exactly what it
