Invited to Pipe Cabin
On Thursday evening. August 80,
after choir practice, the Wealey
league held a meeting for the pur
pose of electing officer for the com-
lnjr year.
Those elected were: President, Relen
Power; first vice-president. Frances
Combe; second vice-president, Jean
Otlltngs; third vice-president, Joyce
Banish; fourth vice-president, Leo
Taylor; secretary, Beth Ollllngs, and
treasurer, Florence Neuman. This
cabinet will take the place of the one
temporarily elected at the organlza
tlon of the league, but whose mem
bers are leaving for school.
Plans were discussed for giving
farewell to those members who are
leaving for school.
After choir rehearsal the members
of the choir made arrangements to
hold a swimming plcnlo next Friday
at the A. W. Plpee cabin at Edge
wood Park. Mr. and Mrs. Pipes have
asked the choir to their cabin In
recognition of the good work that it
lias been doing all summer.

At Gold Mill Tomorrow
Opening at ten o'clock Saturday
morning In Gold Hill, the annual
Bebekah district convention Is to be
held, and a large number of mem
bers from various groups are expect
ed to attend.
The program planned for the day,

the nine lodges composing district
.No. 13.
To Instruct the lodges In the work
of the order, Orace Christiansen of
Portland, president of the Rebekah
assembly, will be In attendance.
A basket dinner has been planned
for noon, with a banquet at alx
o'clock In the evening.

Aug. 31. (AP) A Jazs tune he
pumped from his accordion still ring
ing in his ears, Louis Sprague Doug
lass, 40, walked calmly Into Arizona's
lethal gas chamber shortly after mid
night today and was executed for the
murder of Ralph Hart, Yuma county
prospector.
He was pronounced dead eight and
one-half minutes after the gas was
turned on at 13:30 a. m.
The former New York taxi driver,
who protested his Innocence to the
last, passed his final hours playing
the accordion that has brightened his
weeks of waiting in condemned row.
He began to play immediately after
he had been baptized last night Into
the Catholic faith.

north from San Francisco In order

and Mrs. Charles T. Sweeney, presi
dent of the auxiliary to the State
Medical society, will meet them at
Crater Lake tomorrow and accompany
the couple to Medford.
Tomorrow evening at 0 o'clock, In
the dining room at the Hotel Med
ford, a no-host dinner Is being given
In honor of Dr. and Mrs. Bauer. All
doctors and their wives, also health
unit workers, are Invited to attend to
meet Dr. and Mrs. Bauer,
The banquet will be followed at
7:30 by the address In the court
house.

In view of the possibility of compli
cations resulting from the wound re
ceived yesterday by R. M. Brooks,
sentence of Henry Foes, who admit
ted shooting Brooks in order to stop
work on a fill which he felt would
damage his property, wlil be post
poned until September IS, circuit
Judge B. L. Eddy stated today.
Fosa appeared in court this morn
ing and entered a plea of guilty to
a charge of assault with a danger
ous weapon. Brooks, he told the
court, had been filling a watercourse
and the obstruction. Foes said he be
lieved, would change the stream so
that It would undermine his prop
erty. He declared that he had failed to
get relief from city police and health
officers, to whom he had made com
plaints, and became suddenly aggra
vated and desperate and fired three
shots at Brooks, intending to frighten
him away from the work. The third
shot struck brooks In the arm.

CLEVELAND, Aug. 81. (AP)
Douglas Davis, Atlanta, Oa., filer, was
flrnt to finish in the trans-continental
air race here today, but it was
not Immediately determined whether
he would be the winner. The decision
will rest upon the elapsed time taken
by the three competitors in the race
between Burbank, Calif., and Cleve
land. The elapsed time for Davis was
nine hours, 30 minutes and 41 sec
onds. He arrived at 3:4A p. m., (E.
a. t.)
Lee Oelbach, New York flier, who
started an hour and 33 minutes later
from Burbank, has a chance to win
provided he arrives before 5:20 p. m.,
officials of the races said.
The third contestant, John Worth-
ern, of Pine Bluff, Ark., lost his

MORRISTOWN, Term Aug. 81. (JP)
A bank president was fatally shot
In his private offloe today by a girl
who killed herself with the same
weapon.
Witnesses said the girl, registered
at a hotel as Mis Mary 8am Bruce
of Nashville but carried a card giv
ing her address as Lebanon, Tenn.,
walked into the offlc of J. O. fihel
ton, 85, president of the Hamblen na
tional bank and a few minutes later
the banker came out clutching his
breast and slumped to the floor In
the lobby.
The girl, a brunette about 37 years
old. was found on the floor of the
bank president's office. A pistol was
nearby.
Police Chief B. F. Richardson, said
a note found later In the girl's purse,
read:
"I loved Jesse better than life. He
was fine and honorable In every re
spect, but life to me Is meaningless
without him. Please notify my father,
Rev. W. J. Bruce, Lebanon, by tele
gram. Will you do it tactfully?"

the Welfare Exchange being conduct
ed under the SERA, today expressed
the pleasure of the workers in the
fine response from the public In
connection with the opening of the
exchange this season.

were taken to the exchange and will
be distributed to those in need.
E. L. Vinton, assistant engineer of
the SERA project, was here yester
day and expressed his satisfaction at
the manner In which the exchange
was being conducted.
Due to Monday being a holiday,
the Welfare Exchange will be closed
on that day, but will be opened on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The exchange Is located on the third
floor of the city hall.
GASOLINE CUT CENT

A reduction of one cent per gallon
in gasoline, was announced today by
the major gasoline companies, with
the exception of one. A decrease of
one cent per gallon on first and sec
ond structure gasoline, and a half
cent on third, has been made.
