A picnic dinner will be held at
noon, with Mr. and Mrs. Wagner, Mr.
and Mrs. Louis Brown, Mrs. Lawrence
Wagner, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wagner
and Paul Wagner, also Paul Luy of
Medford present.
On Thursday evening the Waners
were hosts at their Ashland home to
a group of friends at dinner. Present
were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brown. Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Miles and Paul Luy of
Medford; Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Kinney,
Mr. and Mrs. Wagner's ntece of Los
Angeles; Mrs. Lawrence Wagner, Paul
Wagner, and the hosts.
Mrs. Gore Returns
From Vacation Trip
Mrs. E. E. Gore haa returned from
her vacation spent In Portland and
Eugene, where she haa been taking
special extension courses In music,
with F. W. Goodrich, Madame Mart
guerlte Llsznlewska, of the Clncln
natl Conservatory of Music, and oth
ers who are on the coast for the
summer.

ford that Mr. and Mrs. Rankin Est en,
accompanied by their daughters, the
Misses Kathleen and Lenora, arrived
In Chicago on Thursday, having left
Medford the preceding Saturday,
They are visiting relatives and
friends in that city and the Misses
Estes made a trip to Terra Haute,
Ind., where they visited Miss Mary
Btachoff, who formerly resided In tills
city. The Eatea family plans to re
main In the middle west for about
two months.

The Loynl Women's class of the
First Christian church held Its regu
lar monthly meeting In the recrea
tional hall of the church Tuesday
afternoon. The president, Mrs. J. C.
Woods, called the meeting to order
and all Joined In singing "More Love
to Thee."
Devotional period was ted by Mrs.
Currier. Attcr a short business ses
sion, a program of readings and reci
tations was enjoyed. At the social
hour following, refreshments were
served by a committee In charge of
Mrs. M. E. Dodge, to twenty-nine
members and guests.

League Delegates

At the regular meeting of the Ore
gon League of Western Writers,
scheduled for Saturday afternoon,
September 3, the delegates to the
nstlonnl convention recently held In
Portland, will give reports, It was
announced yesterday.

In Providence, H. I., for the past five
years, is visiting her mother. Mrs. E.
II. Hurd and her ulster, Mrs. J. P. Me-
darls at their home on West Tenth
street.
Enroute to Medford, Miss Hurd
stopped at the Chicago .Exposition,
visited with her brother and family
at Albuquerque, New Mexico and with
friends in Hollywood, Paloa Verdes,
and Sn Francisco, Calif.
She will return to New England the
early part of September and will
take up her new duties aa general
secretary of the Y. W. C. A. at Hol
yoke, Mass.
Medford Residents
At Picnic in Riddle
There were several persons from
Medford who last Sunday attended
the annual reunion of the Riddle
clan at that town near Roseburg.
The family is descended from William
H. and Mnxlmllla Bouse man Riddle,
who settled there In 1B51.
Included among those from this
section attending were Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Strang, Mr. and Mrs. E. M.
Wilson, Fred Strang and son Billy,
Helen Strang Holmes and daughter,
Mrs. Marie Merrlmnn Bennett and
Mrs. Anna Clark, all of Medford, and
Mrs. A. L. Harvey of Ashland.
The picnic waa held at the Ump
qua camp ground on the river, with
about 100 persons In attendance.
Rebekah Convention
To Be at Gold Hill
The annual Rebekah district con
vention will be held in Gold Hill
Saturday, September 1, commencing
at 10 a. m.
There are nine lodgea In district
No. 13 and each will take part in
the program planned for the day.
Grace Christiansen of Portland,
president of the Rebeknh assembly,
will be present and Instruct the
lodges In the work of their order.
A basket dinner will be held at
noon and banquet at 0 p. m.

Portland were recent guesta of Mr
and Mrs. Fred Fitk at their home on
South Newtown street. The visitors
were spending their vacation in
southern Oregon and had been at the
Oregon Caves for several days. They
also made a trip to Crater Lake
where they visited their niece. Mlw

Crater Lake lodge this season.

Event of Thursday

The Soldiers' and Sailors' He-union
at the armory, scheduled for Thurs
day, August 30, will open at 10 a. m.,
and continue through until 4:00 p.
m., according to the announcement
made yesterday.
A covered dish luncheon will he
conducted at noon, and all persons
attending are asked to bring their
own table service.
At 1 :30 p. m.i a patriotic program
Is to bo given, at which Commander
Gates of Portland and Mr, Baker of
Eugene will be guest speakers.

Rural Life Topic
Missionary Group
The August social and program
meeting of the Missionary society of
the South Methodist church was held
at the home of Mrs. Peters on Ross
Lane last Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Rice had charge of the pro
gram on the subject of 'Llfe In the
Rural South and Its Significance,"
in which the fact was brought out
that most of the great leaders came
from the rural districts, and Inas
much as the mral population of the
South la forty-six per cent of the
whole rural population of the nation
It becomes a national consideration.
Rural communities not only give us
leadership but are to be depended
on to supply a cltlzenahlp strong and
healthy In body for urban civilization
has yet to prove its ability to be self
perpetuating and 6elf-sustalning.
After the program refreshments
were served by Mrs. Peters assisted

Pen Pushers Give
Original Poems In
Meeting Thursday
One of the most unusual meetings
since Its orgsnlzatlon was that of
the Pen Pushers' club, held Thursday
evening at the home of Mrs. Atlanta
Batchwell. Roll call was responded
to with short poems of unusual metre
and a dlsousslon of the various forms
of poetry. In the club contest, Mrs.
Mary R. Graves held the highest
number c points for the period
since the last meeting. One of her
poems was also published In the
Poet's Corner of the Portland Journal
of August 13.
Miss Margaret Daley was a guest
of the club and read a very clever
poem In honor of Mrs. Satchwell
Mrs. Olive May Cook read a short
story and also a poem for criticism.
Mrs. Satchwell, Mrs. Hedges and Mrs.
Anna Wlnterhalder all gave Interest
ing accounts of the recent convention
of the League of Western Writers,
which they attended in Portland. An
outline of study was discussed, and
Mrs. Graves was appointed to secure
data for the next meeting.
After the usual business and study
meeting, a social hour was enjoyed.
The club will meet again In two
weeks at the homeJof the secretary,
Mrs. Cook, on South Oakdale avenue.

Miss Dixon Returns
From Vacation Trip
Miss Jane Dixon returned Friday
from a vacation, spent with friends
at Portland and Yakima. The trip
included a visit to Rainier national
park via the Yakima park entrance.

recently completed a month's cruise
down the Suwannee river on a raft
made by his own hands.
