Mustafa Kemal Shows Lead
ershipNation At Danger
Point Economically
Fine Army Being Trained.
Bf FERDINAND C. M. JAIIN
Tnltwl Pres Staff Correspondent
ANKARA, Turkey. (UP) The Turk
Uh republic Is firmly established and
well on the road to progress, under
ths leadership of Ghszl Mustafa
Kemal.
Economically, the nation, has, how
ever, reached a danger rone.
This la the conclusion at which
the United Press staff correspondent
arrived after a lengthy stay In the
capital of th country.
Puts House In Order
Ths nation wants and needs peace
In order to put Its house In order.
Risky foreign entanglements arc
btlng carefully avoided; but the
country la well prepared to repulse
any attack.
Ths army, composed of sturdy
peasants, who do one year and a half
of compulsory aervlce, Is trained ex
oellently and Is well equipped.
Politically, no sign of opposition
Is visible within the country.
Ths adherents of the sultanate and
of ths khallfate gradually are dying
out. Most of the ghazl's former ad
versaries, who remained In the coun
try, have mads their peace with the
present regime.
Economically, the outlook Is not
quit as promising.
Ths country is rich In natural rs
sources. iMtt Census
According to the last census of
1037, It had a population of 13,648.
000. A minister recently claimed It
now had reached 18.000.000. This may
be a slight exaggeration; but It
Is doubtless. Increasing. This Is
largely due to effective meaaures to
reduce mother and Infant mortality
But ready capital for development
of the natural rosources Is lacking.
The money circulation Is about
130.000.000 Turkish pounds, without
recurring to Inflationary measures,
It might, as Bhukrl Kaya, minister
of the Interior, aald, be Increased to
175.000.000. Even tills figure would
bs very low for a population of about
18.000,000 or 16,000,000.
Much money which might have
been used for vital constructive pur
poses has been Invested In costly of
fice pslaces and showy apartment
buildings.
Taxes are extremely high owing to
ths government's ambitious recon
struction program and to defense expenditure.
