As Time Tolls 50th Year
A record of aome sort u mlt on
the Medford golf course yssUrdsj.
In the first plsoe It wu 100 In the
(hide. In the scond pises It wu
Chun Egsn's 0th birthday. In the
third plscs Chan had Just made the
front drm. as the oldest former ama
teur golf champion to be admitted to
the champlonanip tourney ai rmi'
delphla. without golnj thru a quail
fvlh(t round.
Chan decided to celebrate reaching
the half century mark. Also the fact
he Is to play for the title again tnia
year. Selecting a caddy young enough
to be his gtandaon, and hla new Brit
ish made clube. Chan alammed
screamer through the heat from the
lint tee, got a perfect aecond ahot,
end proceeded to take 3 putU for a
par four.
Shoots Flock of Para
He got hie par on the next hole.
And on the next. And the next. And
so on until getting tired of para he
pulled a couple of blrdlee. He would
have had a flock of the latter If a
few of the f alia that a topped on the
lip of the cup hadn't been so swollen
bv the heat they refused to drop In.
But there was nothing "swollen"
about Chan. Aa usual he was lean aa
wolf hound, and tough as nails, and
no tension in his hat band. The
weathor was hot but there was noth
ing hot about Chan but his game.
60 on the revamped course, longer
Jry over 100 yards than the old course
he shot a sweet TO, 16 pars, two
birdies and cumo In under? reefs, aa
smoothly aa a Vanderbllt cup win
der. How's that for a golfer of two
score and ten I It wasn't so much sen
sational goll as perfect golf. which
Is a lot better. There wasn't a scratch
hit in the entire IS. The bell was
straight for the pin. all the way.
Makes Oolf History
So Chan, 50 years and 2i hours old
today, Is feeling pretty good. So Is his
caddy and all the local golfing fans.
He may not win the national title
gain thla year, but he Is bound to
make golf history, for Chan B0 years
young, Is making golf history all the
time.

WORLD NET BODY
PLANS CURE FOR
FOOT FAULT EVIL
Sole Distressing Feature of
Great Game May Be Elimi-
. nated by Use of Rear
Auxiliary Base Line
LONDON (AP) The International
Lawn Tennis federation at last Is
making a serious effort to abolish the
foot-fault, the one distressing fea
ture of an otherwise almost flawless
sport.
By next season. If the recommen
dation of a special committee Is ap
proved by all the member nations,
the game's greatest mental hazard to
players and Its biggest pain In the
neck to fans will virtually have been
removed.
What the oommlttee plans to pro
pose at the next annual meeting In
March, 1S39, is that an auxiliary line
be drawn at a distance of two feet
behind the base line.
Makes for Mental Ease.
The server would be required to
keep one foot behind this new line
throughout his delivery, but other
wise could deport himself about as he
pleased. He wouldn't have to worry
about whether, In throwing himself
Into his swing, one foot was crossing
the baseline before he clouted, the
ball.
The only drawback seems to be
that the new scheme Is bound to
reduce the speed of service. The added
two feet makes the angle of flight
more difficult, and all except the
tallest players probably would have
to ease up some on their first serve
to keep It Inside the court.
That might not be a bad Idea.
either, as there haa been something
of a campaign recently against the
use of so-called cannonball services,
on the ground that it gives the un
usually tall player a big advantage.
They Couldn't See tm.
It was noted during Wimbledon
that some of the linemen couldnt
tell within a foot of where some of
Les Stoefen's scorchers struck ths
grass. Several times the towering
Callforalan was credited with aces
on balls that seemed easily a foot
past the service line. The bewildered
linesmen could only blink and say
