"Manhattan Melodrama" won him a
new starring contract, haft the title
role in "The Thin Man," opening
today at the Craterian theater. Myr
na Loy, who appeared with Powell in
the former picture. Is again co-starred,
and the two play the parts of
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Charles In the
movie version of the widely read
DashieU Hammett mystery novel.
As a retired detective, Powell goes
to New York with his lovable, wealthy
wife. Miss Loy, for the holidays.
I There, against his will, he becomes
' involved In a triple murder mystery
j which remains a baffling problem
until the very last few feet of the
film are unreeled with an entirely
: original method of solving the mys
! tery which ends the picture In a
novel climax. Although essentially
a mystery story, the film is loaded
I with sparkling comedy and romantic
j interludes.
Appearing in the supporting cast
I are Maureen O'Sulllvan. Nat Pendle-
I ton and Minna Gombell, besides
many other well known players..

theme of Uncle Sam's navy bovs and
high-minded society folk is rich with
entertainment. That robust old sea
ditty. "Barnacle Bill the Sailor," even
comes in for Its share of the fun.
With an audience of bewildered so
ciety people a an audience, Morris,
quite properly "oiled." sings the song
with much gusto lntermlngted with
loud hiccups. But the navy, having
landed, takea the situation well In
hand.
